I don't find the rakugos that funny, I only smiled a bit at a few parts. Is it just my sense of humor or is it due to different era and cultural?

I agree, I didn't understand the humor in them but otherwise the anime was good.

It's most likely due to what you mentioned with difference in eras and cultural background, plus a lot of jokes is probably lost in translation. Puns and play on words won't really work when translated, so I think this is the issue here. I believe the stories are actually funny in original language, so I don't think it would be fair to discredit them just because we can't understand them in Japanese!

I'm not trying to discredit them. I'm just asking a genuine question because I'm curious.

I also didn't find the rakugo funny, but I did like how it related to the characters and the moments derived from it.

I'm not saying you do, I'm just trying to explain the reason, why they may not be funny to us ToT

Not all of rakugo consist of funny stories - some are more emotional, some may teach life lessons, and others mock society (can be funny). though yea, this series has pretty much the same problem as Joshiraku (and i assume Showa Genroku, too): different culture and language = different humour, joke lost in translation, etc. Prob the only story that would be understood by everyone was Sasaki's Interrogation, but thats about it

It helps that, at least, the lives of the cast play out almost like rakugo, so it is still somewhat entertaining

I also didn't find them to be funny, as I'm not familiar with the stories told in the anime.

the stories are very old, so it's probably just because humor has changed a lot

me too. i don't laugh that much like the audience on the show. maybe it's because of era and also cultural differences. however i like this show

It's not just the rakugos that aren't funny, it's the entire show that sucks.
Me every time I hear the word "reparations": 🤣🤣🤣

i dont think they are meant to be funny, i think the intent is to be unfunny in a way that brings people together
