From what I understand, this is where the new anime stops, with this intermission thing being used as the introduction of the first episode. That was a good move, I don't think many people would have been hooked with the generic high fantasy setting of the beginning, and even less would have liked its tone and comedy (in fact that was what happened).

Well, compared to the two anime, visually it isn't as good, it lacks the motions and the level of the effects of the first, and the polished artwork of the second. Plus, as it happens with most well adapted dumb action stories, music, voice acting, motion, coloring and special effects just makes them better, and that's why I always preferred the animated versions (Hellsing, JoJo, this).

When it comes to writing, this first half of the manga was easily the best in terms of pacing, it wasn't as quick as the first nor did have long exposition bits as the second. I mean they are there but they are delivered much more quickly, the second anime should have sped up those bits.

In terms of characters, the first anime is the best version. Although it doesn't give Gara and Nei enough time to shine like the manga and the second anime, it expands on their background stories or even comes up with ones, and are to the most part shown in a serious way. It also skips or underplay most of the incestuous grooming between Dark Schneider and Arshes Nei.

Overall I liked the manga the least, partly because it is the worst in terms of visuals and partly because I have already seen this story twice.

The first anime is visually the best and has the coolest soundtrack in my opinion, plus it skips the worsts aspects of the original while expanding more on the characters, but it is also the one with less and simpler content and the more serious tone isn't the best with this type of story. Nonetheless, I'd say it is the best version overall.

The second anime is the version I liked the most. It is by far the most spectacular, with sound on par with the original, a cute ending song, a badass opening song which has become one of my favourites, good visuals, and it adds more screentime for Gara and Nei to what was covered in the original. The problem with this adaptation is the pacing, it is the worst of the three in that regard. The original anime skips a lot but at least it covers the major aspects. The manga has a lot more comedy and ecchi which is way worse in the newer anime because instead of underplaying it like the first anime, it decided to give it even more screentime than the original, and God did it amplify the fucked up relationship between Dark Schneider and Arshes Nei. Also, the exposition bits and the long fights against minor characters are just more tolerable in the manga, and even more in the previous adaptation (if they are not skipped). Overall I'd say it is the worst version.

Anyways the three of them are fine up until this point, but from what I understand the author changed everything for the worse after the time skip that is about to happen, before he gave up on it because he didn't know how to continue it or didn't care about doing so. From what I've seen, if I understood correctly, the studio he has even works making porn of Bastard!! since some years ago? If that's the case then this manga sadly shares the same luck with Outlanders, where the mangaka kept publishing that type of content within that universe and sometimes even with the original characters, instead of coming up with actual new content. Well at least that manga was finished.
