Does anyone know why Gojou uses keigo (Japanese polite form of speaking) when talking to Marin and other classmates? It sounds kinda weird to me since they are of the same age and have no social hierarchy over each other. Btw, Gojou speaks casually with his grandfather, so he's not incapable of it either.

probably cus he's new and doesn't know them, it's hard for english only speakers to imagine cus there's not really a "respectful" dialect for english but in most langauges that have it, from my experience, when meeting strangers the respected form is used despite of age

He likely uses it as he kinda looks down on himself due to having a hobby he perceives as shameful or not fitting him. As such he distanced himself during a long time though school. When the anime picks up, it is likely that this is the first meaningful relationship he has developed since maybe elementary school. As such he is unsure how to conduct himself. He chooses formal because it is safer of the 2 forms. He additionally don't want to annoy people around him and as such uses formal to not offend people new to him. He also at the beginning perceives himself as of lower value compared to Kitagawa-san.

Disclaimer: This is my own opinion based on my experience with both the manga and anime.

Simple reason: That is how his character is, like being very formal and polite. He is not much social with other people, except his grandfather, since childhood.

hierarchy is unfortunately something really crucial in japanese society and especially at school. you have to know where (what school caste) you belong to and use kieigo to people who are 'above' you. it sounds really unequal but apparently it is a common thing in Japan :///

He never really had any friends as a kid and was raised to be polite. He essentially is just a little socially awkward but overall nice guy and so speaks quite formerly

. He would have started like that with Kitagawa as he never expected them to become friends and strangers often use keigo in Japan. Now he would probably be embarrassed to switch to a more informal way of speaking. As if making a declaration that they are now close.

this would track, you would use polite until a social cue let's you know they're cool with you not doing that and wpuldn't be something he's especially good at doing.

I think he speaks the way he is. Maybe he was raised to be polite with everyone, not just elders, who knows.

even within keigo, there are three types. teineigo, sonkeigo and kenjougo. gojou uses teineigo with Marin and his classmates, which is comparatively the least formal, and is simply a common way of speaking politely to anyone, like some people have mentioned in this thread. it has nothing to do with hierarchy, and it is just him being respectful of Marin and his classmates (in the case of his classmates, it also has to do with the fact that he doesn't know them well. You tend to use keigo when talking to someone you aren't familiar with. regardless of what their social standing is.)

i agree with the other comments but yeah it pisses me off how marin is always like chou yaba~ and using all informal talk while hes always so polite like bruh shut the fuck up speak normally. and then its like marin doesnt even notice it, normally in shows like this the girl would say that he doesnt have to be so formal
