lmaooo I was showing my friend this in school and she ABSOLUTELY hates Howard (what he was called in the version i watched)

We had a teacher called Howard and every once in a while she would shout "FUCKING HOWARD" and then immediately add "anime Howard"

that was kinda the point of his character, you werent meant to like him at the start. i think he was the kind of character who was effectively us in a sense, which could even make things worse when you look at his actions and try to not relate to him. he's basically a spoiled child who has never needed to ask for anything in life, he gets what he wants and gets upset when he doesnt. not saying that everyone is like this but when you put that kind of character into a situation where no one cares who his father is, what kind of money his parents have, and no one is going to give him anything without earning it, you get to watch him effectively grow up. we could see ourselves in that a bit. if you were lost on some island with no one around it would be scary, survival instinct will only help you so far and you have to change your entire mindset in order to continue to live. this is what we would have to do and this is what Howard(named that in my version as well) has to do as well. we see him slowly gaining some humility and learning to work with others, we see him make mistakes, and we see him grow from those mistakes to become a better person. in the end he's still Howard but you can tell that he has lost much of his old self and realistically that would happen to many people in the same situation. once you have been rescued whatever childish part of yourself you had was left behind on that island and only the man left. if you look at their archetypes, Luna was the level headed motherly figure who was pretty much already an adult after losing her father. Kaoru was the lone survivalist who had to learn to work together. Menori was the leader archetype who needed to learn she cant lead in all situations and needed to rely on others where she falls short. Shingo was the prodigy who needed to remember what it meant to be a child. Bell was effectively the father figure who would try to help everyone he could but needed to learn to stand up for himself. and lastly you have Howard and Sharla, they were basically two opposite ends of the spectrum while also being effectively the same kind of archetype...the child that needs to learn to grow up. Sharla is a crybaby who over the course of the show learns how to fight on and stay strong, while Howard masks his fear with childishness and needs to learn how to treat others and have some humility. each character has things they need to abandon from their old life and bring with them into their new life, but Howard and Sharla are basically borderline blank slates in the sense that they needed the most development. each character has tons of personal growth as the show goes on but those two grow the most over the course of the show which is what we can kinda relate to if we were in that situation. most of the characters just needed a nudge in the right direction to have their own personal growth occur but those two needed a complete overhaul in order to come out as better people in the end.
