2022 ONA.

Episode 3 actually covers the events of the movie anyway.

I have only watched the Netflix show and I loved it, should I watch the 1998 movie?? I'll read the manga too.

The 1998 anime, with the hand of Katsuhiro Otomo, is all around way better directed, and we can directly compare the movie with episode 2, that’s in fact about the same part. Episode 2 leaves out a lot of particulars but it’s still really enjoyable, which sums up perfectly how the new anime is, nothing extraordinary, unlike (in my opinion) the original movie, but really enjoyable. If you have watched the new one, definitely try the old movie

The 98 version rocks with it’s cinematic values of that era that hold up very well today. It’s eye candy for sure, but a fun watch. The series compiles the narrative of the movie in the first half of the 6 episodes, while adding and defining it’s own contemporary touches and yet expanding tremendously on the globetrotting intrigue. Fingers crossed for a second season.

At the end kf the day it’s an opinion. Your curiosity is there, so watch them both and establish yours. Something, something dark side…

You should watch both. As someone who watched the movie fansubbed on VHS back in 1999 and considers the movie a masterpiece, this show is pretty good and entertaining. It's not detailed and it doesn't have the production quality of the movie, but is a great watch and very refreshing when you compare it to all the generic stuff coming from Japan.

I found the movie to be pretty average/garbagy and I don't have high hopes the Netflix series changes that, but there is a chance that all it needed was more time so I'll be giving it a shot nonetheless.
I probably regret this post by now.

Put it this way. The 90's movie has stronger presentation, while the Netflix version is a fuller adaptation of the story. So which are you watching it for?
