Hello everyone and welcome to Holo Interviews. Today we sit down with The Holoist Society's foremost expert of Mecha Anime & Manga here at The Mecha Museum started by our friend GenesicKaiser
Tell us a little about yourself
I could be described as an introvert, so I prefer spending by myself. I'm also countryside guy who prefers the quiet and calmness rather than built up areas like cities.
Why GenesicKaiser, What is the meaning behind the name?
GenesicKaiser is a combination of two of my favorite mechs, Genesic GaoGaiGar (GGG for short) and Mazinkaiser, two of the strongest versions of GaoGaiGar, the King of Braves and Mazinger, the Demon God Grandfather/Codfier of pilotable Mecha.
Mazinkaiser
Genesic GaoGaiGar
How did you get into anime and manga and what are some of your favorite anime and manga/LN?
I'm the Pokemon/Yugioh/Digimon generation, so was interested in anime since I was young. What got me into it it fully was this anime on youtube called Rizelmine. The premise is that this guy is forced to marry this government made artificial human girl name Rizel. Now Rizel is younger than him and he likes older women, so he's constantly annoyed by her attempts to woo him. Also her tears explode due to being akin to nitroglycerin, so don't upset her :3.
As for favorites anime/manga: Our Holo-Sama's own wonderful tale itself, Lyrical Nanoha (S1/A's,Strikers/Movie 1st/Movie 2nd A's) Rozen Maiden (, Captain Harlock (1978), GaoGaiGar, Mazinkaiser/Mazinger Zero, Getter Robo Armageddon/Getter Robo Saga (All 5 Getter Robo manga's), GaoGaiGar/GaoGaiGar Final, Ideon/Ideon Be Invoked, Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, Steins:Gate, Mobile Suit Gundam/Gundam Char's Counterattack/Beltorchika's Children (CCA and BC are the same story just one's a movie, the others a manga with both having different mech designs/plot points/characters). A Centaur's Life (Manga, not the watered down anime), Knight's and Magic (Manga), It's My Life, Brigadoon Marin to Melan, UFO Princess Valkyrie, Magic Knight Rayearth, Heaven's Lost Property, Kodomo No Jikan, Devilman (Manga/OVA, not that Crybaby rubbish)
Who's your favorite character and/or waifu?
Holo an Lawrence get their separate Waifu/Fave Character row here :D
My fave waifus:Takamachi Nanoha, Fate Testarossa (Both Lyrical Nanoha), Vert (Neptunia), Kurumi Tokisaki, Yuzuru Yamai, Yoshino Himekawa (Date A Live), Suigintou (Rozen Maiden), Ruru Amour, Setsuna Higashi, Yayoi Kisei, Yui Nagomi, Honoka Yukishiro, Himari Arisugawa (Precure) Hilda (Cross Ange), Excellent Browning (Super Robot Wars), Chitose Hayase (Pretty X Cation 2), Vanilla the Rabbit (Sonic), Mizuki Tachibana(Gravion) Holly Applebee (TheyCallHimCake OC), Himeno Kimihara (Centaurs Life) and many more.
Fave characters: Captain Harlock, Gai Shishioh, Soldato J (GaoGaiGar), Ryoma Nagare (Getter Robo), Kouji Kabuto (Mazinger/Mazinkaiser), Amuro Ray (Mobile Suit Gundam/CCA/BC), Kyosuke Nanbu, Rand Travis (Super Robo Wars), Melan Blue (Brigadoon), Edward Elric, Okabe Rintaro.
What drew you to Mecha and what do you love most about it?
I always enjoyed robots as a kid (Power Rangers, Transformers etc), but I fell out of those briefly in my late adolescents/early teens. But then when was 16, found A Youtube vid called Dan Green vs Dan Green (Yugioh Dub Yugi vs Abridgee Yugi). During the vid, Abridged Yugi defeats Dub Yugi's Slifer The Sky Dragon. Next thing, Dub Yugi says "FINAL FUSION AUTHORIZED!" which confused me. Then cuts to another anime with some girl typing into a Computer and smashing a button saying "Final Fusion Program Drive ENGAGE!". Then it shows this robot emitting a tornado from itself with animal shaped machines burst through the tornado and proceed to combine with the robot in a detailed combination sequence, all while this epic orchesta with a choir plays in the background. The mech forms and powers up, the pilot shouts the mechs name ''GAO! GAI! GAAAARRR!!!". I was blown away at how epic it was. Then it proceeds to attack and defend itself with a rocket punch and barrier, and then clasp it's hands and charged forward with the pilot yelling loudly. All to this an epic violin/symphony playing that screamed heroism.
I found another vid after and it showed Genesic GGG curbstomping this regenerating mech. And when I say curbstomp, he was tearing him apart with the other mech being countered repeatedly. I noted how the pilot, Gai was cool, badass, ferocious and unrelenting with blood on his face (Which is funny as he's a a long haired bishie). All while this somber symphony plays with a mix of guitar in it).
I was hooked, searched for GGG on Youtube and watched it all. It was epic hell. Loved how GGG used Power tools as weapons (GGG has the largest Hammers in fiction). The Series was fun and lighthearted with an over the top, lovable cast. What stood out was how methodical the series was. The cast had logical ways and plans for winning as well as backup plans. GGG's tools were used in more ways than one. For example, it has a Screwdriver called Dividing Driver which opens a temporary spacial rift hole in the ground to fight in and reduce property damage and causalities. But it was also used to dive into deep sea by keeping way water pressure and also to stop slowa rail canon shell. Final was darker and even more epic when Genesic GGG appears.
Afterwards heard of Mazinger Z and Getter Robo. Then found Super Robot Wars W (SRW W)on DS and had to play it since GGG, Mazinkaiser and Getter was in it. SRW intrduced me to more SRW and different mecha. IMO, SRW is a great way to get into mecha as there is a wide variety of mecha, old and new in each installment that your bound to see one you want to watch/read in them.
As for what I love about mecha. It's hard to pinpoint. Mechs seem cool to me. Huge powerful heroes/warriors with varying themes and ideas. A part of me feels bad when they get trashed, but to see a mech fight despite losing arms/legs/weapons etc is pure heroism. Your watching this machine get beaten down yet it keeps getting back up. I like how anime/manga/ln mechs have this power, fear, enormity and even humanty that Western mechs like the ones in Avatar lack. Those are cold war machine in contrast to even the machines of Gundam, The human like look contributing to that. Besides that, mecha can deal with the inherent morality of them. Mazinger for example was like a rampaging monster in the beginning of it's manga. Same for Mazinkaiser. Mazinger Zero flip flops between hero and monster througout the story. Mazinger's name Majinga (Demon God) reflects this as it can be a savior or a destroyer.
What Mecha anime would you recommend to our readers?
Mecha I'd recommend: Mazinger Zero/Mazinkaiser/Mazinkaiser/SKL/Mazinger vs General Darkness, Mazinger Infinity Getter Saga/Armageddon/Arc/New Getter/Shin vs Neo Getter, GGG/Final/Betterman/Hakaioh, Kotetsu Jeeg/Kotetsushin Jeeg/, Gaiking/LOD, Vandread,UC Gundam timeline, G Gundam, Godannar, Gunbuster/Diebuster, Gravion, Dancouga/Nova, Gridman(1993)/SSSS Gridman/Dynazenon, Tetsujin 28 Go (2004), Fafner, Ideon/Be Invoked, Magic Knight Rayearth, Gun X Sword, Super Robo Wars OG Inspector, Nadesico, Tekkaman Blade, Overman King Gainer, Megazone 23 (EP 1, rest are rubbish), Big O, Aquarion/Evol (Avoid Logos), Linebarrel of Iron, Dai-Guard, Might Gaine, J-Decker, Cross Ange, Expelled From Paradise, Majestic Prince, Garandoll, Megaton Musashi
How did you get into Magical Girls genre, and which anime do you think has the best magical girls?
Compared to mecha, I have less of a catalogue than mecha but know of tiles most may not have heard of. I got into them via Sailor Moon at 15, mainly because I thought Sailor Venus looked cute. The Japanese version of SM is not as happy as would think, with the Stars arc being quiet brutal. But my fave is Lyrical Nanoha. Got into it because of GGG actually as Dividing Drivers played over this scene were Nanoha charges up this massive ship wrecking magic blast. I was intrigued as Nanoha's staff was mechanical and had gun cartridges/magazines. Nanoha herself was cool and beautiful. What's funny is she's a sweet heart daily but when did that blast, she had the eyes of a focused warrior. What enticed me more is Lyrical Nanoha as a whole is one big mecha reference. A knowledgable mecha fan can spot each reference. Nanoha herselfis basically a Gundam.
My fave Magical Girls would have to be Nanoha and Fate, several Precures Precure, the Magic Knights from Rayearth and Meimei from Saint Tail.
What interests do you have outside of anime and like to do for fun?
I enjoy building mecha model kits, like long walks in the countryside, I'm interested in Game Design and Programming, having done a 1 year course. I want to learn Celtic Mythoology and Irish as I am Irish myself (I skipped Irish in School).
What kind of music are you into?

If had to is composers, Kohei Tanaka,(GGG, G Gundam,Dai-Guard, Gunbuster/Diebuster Yoshino Yuuji (S&W and Brigadoon), Matsuo Hayato (Rayearth, Hellsing Ultimate, Saint Tail), Koichi Sugiyama (Rayearth, Ideon), Akira Senju (Tetsujin,FMAB). What drew you to Holo and to joining The Holoist Society
What drew me to Holo and S&W was that I was looking for a fun comedy/Slice of life on Youtube and came across it. I was intrigued by Lawrence and Holo in the cart and wondered what it was. I googled images and noted how Holo looked so lively. She looked so sweet and innocent. I got the impression it was a travelling fantasy which worked for me. When watched it, the openings fascinated me. I was on the mark with the mideaval fantasy travelling part. I could relate in any ways as the countrside look spoke to my love of countryside. The travelling aspect and Lawrence and Holo's destitution was relatabe as growing up, I moved around alot, renting houses before settling in a location and travelling an hour journey to and from School. The music spoke to me as an Irishman as it had that Irish flute/ Celtic dance vibe to it. Getting to Holo and Lawrence,I loved Holo's playfulness and her tricky nature. How she'd get Lawrence to think he'd woo'd her or bested her in wit only to turn it around on him. We can all think fondly of Lawrence kissing her hand and leaving her speechlees, only for her to turn it back on him. Well save for that one time he did woo her and she headbutted him in embarrasment. Or when he scolded her in the OVA. Those moments are why I adore the pair. Holo is witty yet cute, epecially her manga version bringing out her maximum cuteness. Lawrence despite being plain, even to Holo's remark. But he's far from a pushover and his gradual matching Holo's wit was fun to watch. I enjoyed Col too, feels like a good, lovable son that brings out Holo and Larence's motherly and fatherly side.
Any anime takes that may be deemed controversial?
My controversial anime takes. Don't buy into non-mecha fans telling others that Gurren Lagann, Evangelion, Darling in the Franxx (Or any other mecha the non-mech a fans know of) are 100% unique, innovative, totally unlike other mecha. Any mecha fan will tell you they are highly derivative and borrow a crap ton of ideas from past mecha. There's a love-hate relationsip with them If a mecha fan had to choose between Getter,Mazinger, GGG or Gurren Lagann, they'll, Gurren Lagann would be dead last. If was Code Geass or UC Gundam, they'd choose UC Gundam, Franxx/Eureka Seven or Godannar/Aquarion/Vandread/Getter the latter 4. Evangelion or Ideon, Ideon. The claim that mecha has no interesting ideas besides the mainstream stuff is rubbish. Take Dai-Guard: Salarymen have to defeats monsters while dealing with red tape and bureaucracy. No mecha has done that idea again and Dai-Guard is 22 years. Now I don't want this to come off as copying = bad. It's claiming your copied work is 100% original or different. Even mecha I listed in recommendations above borrowed stuff from the past in some form. Dai-Guard's setup is GGG but with no alien tech.
Anything you would like to say to the readers?
Last few words. Can't wait for S&W new anime, hope comes soon and Holo gets to show herself again to the world.
Also if interested in SRW,you can download English versions on Singapore PSN or import them. There is SRW 30 on Steam https://store.steampowered.com/app/898750/Super_Robot_Wars_30/ and English patch SRW. You can find em here.

And lastly, Do you support our fight against Myuri in freeing The Myurians from their tyrannical ruler and freeing them into The Holoist Society?
I have said before, Myuri from what seen is Holo without centuries of experience and charisma that Holo has. Comes off as only having Holo's love for food. So my opinion is not very high of her. It doesn't help the manga art looks amateurish compared to the Koume's manga art.
