Life is short and death comes for everyone, so you should love as much as you can and as hard as you can. That's all there is to it. Blue bubbles symbolize life (including Uta, who's always beautiful but also fragile and destined to become foam sooner or later) and red bubbles symbolize death.

I'm not saying I'm 100% right with my interpretation or that it's the only valid one, nor that you should like the movie only because it's thematically cohesive, but I think that if you see the movie through this lens everything makes perfect sense. I'm not going to go in depth explaining everything that happens, but every action and every character serves the purpose of reinforcing that central theme (even the Under Takers, as much as I don't particularly love them).

Or at least that's my take on it.

hey man listen I don't even think the people that wrote this story knows what tf they wanted to say lol I think they just ripped off the little mermaid story added a hint of weathering with you and parkour and hired the best animators to cover up for the shit story but if you can find a meaning to whatever it is they wrote then you should totally run with that that's beautiful if you think that's what this piece of art means whether if that's what they were trying to portray or not if that's what it means to you then run with that

I'm allowed to express my opinion on a story whether it's good or bad plus I'm calm plus I did all that to say what I said at the end which was completely positive. I think it's trash but if someone could find a beautiful meaning in something that I personally feels like has no direction story wise then that's beautiful and he should totally run with it.

I agree with you for the most part, I honestly didn't find the story incohesive at all ig for me it was more that the plot in general was just so mediocre and the characters one dimensional, even including the symbolism. however, to anyone who enjoys it, more power to ya.

The main plot is cohesive, yes, though that's because the children's story it was inspired(or taken) from was cohesive in the first place. The finer details, not so much.

imo the movie goes like this:

alien invasion -> alien falls in love with human -> alien's sister got mad and because of sister complex, she tries to separate the alien and the human -> not sure what exactly happened but the sister probably got defeated and the sister is also gone

and then there's Eve who basically carried the show with his angelic singing, combined with none other than hiroyuki sawano's OSTs. Dude the sound is like 11/10 I still can't get over it.

This is one of the movies/series where an aspect or two of it is way beyond good while the rest is pretty mid

Appreciate all the comments, it's always interesting reading different perspectives, but I feel I should add some clarifications. I don't think the story is a masterpiece or incredibly complex, in fact I think everything from the plot to the symbolism is simple enough to be easily understood by everyone. That applies to the characters too, they don't have a lot of depth to them, but I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing. I think what they were going for is trying to make the message as clear as possible and hit as hard as it could, and whether or not they succeded at that is up for debate. For me it was a positive experience, in no small part thanks to the OST by Hiroyuki Sawano and the hability of director Tetsuro Araki and his team to create memorable sequences and gorgeous shots.

I understand where the people that don't like the movie are coming from though, but I will also add that most of the people who are criticising it for being a copy of The Little Marmaid haven't read the original Little Marmaid.

It's straightforward, yes, but take it with a grain of salt that it's only BARELY comprehensible by the final moments.

It's cohesive because they just follow the plot of the little mermaid story and this is exactly why I found the plot to be a bit boring. I actually expect them to change the ending in the little mermaid story but no, it's just one straightforward storyline.

I agree that the overall theme and scenario of the movie is cohesive, but I think in general, people are dissatisfied with the amount of unanswered questions that lie in the finer details.
.

In addition, the movie hinted at various things that people might have thought would be further explained but were never really brought back up again:

It was a really beautiful movie and the soundtrack was superb, but for me, the plot left more questions about the worldbuilding that the thematic expression could not completely cover up.
