So the anime, presumably because it can't halt the action for a paragraph or two of exposition, hasn't talked much about how the magic works.

Basically, people have Ether; this is mana and can naturally be used for self-enhancement, as shown by the visible glow around people. Menou can adjust the color of this glow for camoflage as shown with the dress but is not skilled enough to maintain it while moving. Flare is. People have varying reserves of ether; it's generally stronger in females. It can also be drawn from leylines running through the earth and sky. Menou has an unusually low amount for an executioner but is really good at using it.

To accomplish most external effects, people need to use crests, basically precoded spells that can be activated by pouring ether into them. They're built into weapons, usually no more than three, and are in coins, I think as an anti-counterfitting measure. The scriptures priestesses carry around are completely filled with crests, one for every verse. Normally you open the book to the page with the crest you want in order to activate it. Menou is awesome and has apparently memorized the exact location of every verse and can activate them while the book is closed.

Lost Ones have a Pure Concept and a tremendous quantity of ether. Pure Concepts are tremendously powerful and potentially extremely broad; they can do almost anything related to the word.
Menou's hometown was transformed to salt by White, and it "bleached" her memories and a large chunk of her soul away.As a Lost One uses their Pure Concept it becomes more firmly embedded, growing stronger but eating away at the user's personality. Menou thinks that's why Mitsuki immediately turned to the idea of using Null to obliterate people, though I don't think it works that fast.

It's also possible to transfer ether, as Menou demonstrated, but apparently usually really, really hurts.

Thanks for the explanation. This was useful. They may not be able to explain much due to the setting and the locations, which is why they don’t want to force it. It wouldn’t make sense if Menou was talking about the crest on the train when she wasn’t even asked about it.

But still it could work as an inner monologue. I am sure they will explain everything in the later episodes.

So, we've seen a lot of primary color conjurings and an original sin conjuring, which naturally raises the question of what those are. Unfortunately I can't really tell you much about what they do beyond "make monsters"; they're apparently very versatile but that's the only theme I've been able to pick out.

What I can tell you is that they originate from Vessel, the Human Error of the Mechanical Society, and Evil/Pandemonium, the Human Error and creator of all demons. These facts are known, and in fact a lot of the Primary Color stuff is smuggled out of the Mechanical Society past the armies of knights and priestesses battling to keep it contained. As you might expect from the fact that they come from two of the greatest disasters to befall the world, they're highly illegal.

Obviously that raises the question of what might have come from Star and Dragon, the other two named in the diagram during Menou's flashback. So far nothing's been mentioned.

As for that blob that fell towards Akari, that's from White. As she noted, it's largely unaffected by her use of Time. Pure Concepts have limited effects when used on each other. That's also why Akari couldn't just revert Menou turning into salt like how she healed herself or that boy back in episode 2; the Sword Of Salt is also a manifestation of a Pure Concept.

I thought Null could have nulled his death. Glad its true, or could have been. I hadn't watched the trailer so I thought this guy would be the obstacle with Null nulling his death but it turned out wrong.
