Art Lesson: Expectations VS Reality

Is it just me or is the art in this show a bit of a let down. I see everyone hyping the show up with prominent names backing the project especially classifying the opening visuals to be a masterpiece.

But when it really comes down to it, isn't this shows art and animation average at best and feels like we got catfished? Might be because of the smaller budget but this is pretty average among all other donghua even the plot is average. It's still enjoyable nonetheless, just thought it would be good to share especially with those high ratings after 1 or 2 eps.

I do have to agree, on the plus side the adaptation is going way better than what the manhua had. They changed a bunch for the first 2 episodes and have done it was better.

Overall still a decent power fantasy series but it's cooler cause it's not an Isekai.

I can barely follow this because the english sub I'm using is incompetent
and I have absolutely no idea what the hype or budget was surrounding this project going it

it seems...fine? Feels very amateur tbh. Lots of rotoscoping and low frame animation without enough motion blur to compensate.

the effects are nothing impressive but they ain't exactly bad either. Is this based on an incredibly famous web novel?

you're not wrong, there aren't any legitimate subs for it only 2 fansub groups and they're a lot hard to understand some times.

I just read the first few chapters, I see what you mean
translation issues aside the direction in the donghua is just too comedic. Too irreverent to the point where it undercuts important dramatic moments. The manhua also has much stronger characterisation.
And that's just from the first 3 chapters

Photography of this anime is an atrocity about 90% of the time, the background and the characters are painfully dissonant. The designs often feel off too. Nonetheless, there are some good key scenes with great sakuga.

a lot of the good sakuga is rotoscoped tho. You can telly by the strange and disjointed way they move.
There are some good scenes but overall a big F from me

Opening Theme is certainly a masterpiece but huge catfish. I was disappointed in the overall animation and the plot is just average

Yep, OP was marvelous, I heard they picked all top animators for the OP, but for the actual show, the animation was below average at best

The animation for Eren looking guy fight was below average? Idk bout that lol. Yeah the animation is not consistent but some ep has great animation.

fight scenes had great Animation, but overall it was kinda decent, average to be honest.

Mmm does appear they spent more on the OP and EP than on anything else. The art is a little lackluster and the animation is mediocre compared to what is showcased in the OP but I'm enjoying the series (although I haven't read the source material so I don't know what I'm truly missing). I've watched my share of xianxia/wuxia donghua and many are copy and pasted, 3D CGI travesties. The 2D is always refreshing to see and the modern day cultivation route isn't nearly as overdone as its historical themed counterpart. It gives me some Quanzhi Fashi vibes with some of the humor of Daily Life of the Immortal King. The bad guys are nearly as cliche as many cultivation donghua (I'm from the main family and can break all the rules I want, you branch family trash). I guess it depends on rating criteria but if it's art/animation....mmmm 5 or 6. Originality, plot and enjoyability I'd say 7 or 8. I'll probably rate it a 6 or 7.

Personally, didn't have particularly high expectations to begin with. It just so happened that the show had interesting enough of a world to keep me watching. I normally don't watch much donghua to begin with and stick to anime as donghua tends to have allot of CGI that I am honestly not that interested in watching at the moment. I tend to feel a little less enthusiastic on CGI because, at least in terms of characters, it's allot easier to do CGI than drawing every single frame. (not that I don't watch a CGI show occasionally, it's just that I tend to appreciate the work more on hand drawn animation).
Often to help with things like lack of time and funding, animator tricks like reusing assets help decrease the workload of people. And tbh, not every scene needs to have fully animated characters to get a point across.

Tbh, this donghua has decent animation as I have seen much less put into a series before. In the end it comes down to looking at it for what it is rather than what it isn't.
In art, there is rarely a part that can't be improved upon. Many artists hate their art even if by other peoples standards, it is good.

The animation isn’t too bad for me, and bc I know a fair amount of Chinese the bad subtitles don’t make it a bad time watching this anime
