I didn't expect a masterpiece in this series by any means and more of this just being a dumb but fun read, but I actually thought this was decent. I liked the attention of detail given to the lore early on focusing on the war between the Coalition of Seven led by the Demons as well as the Alliance of Four led by the humans, and how everything played out to lead to the world currently undergoing 'peace' between various species through a treaty.
And while the rest of the volume played itself out in a simple fashion, it worked enough for me. Bash doesn't have much actual growth to go through with combat but he sure does have a lot of work to do with his personality and ability to attract women of various species, despite being an orc. He's a nice orc but the orc does have different values and practices compared to other species so adapting to the treaty at hand where he has to earn the woman's respect and approval for sex and potentially marriage in the future is key for someone like him, particularly given the reputation he has as an Orc Hero.
I would have liked more focus on Boggs though, the antagonists in this volume were flat here and probably the biggest weaknesses in this volume for me, even if they're not important in the long run by any means.
Nice that Judith just didn't immediately follow Bash after Bash saving her, and is focused on doing her own thing as a rookie knight and still has to sort out her feelings (past-trauma for orcs and having that suddenly change a bit with Bash's arrival) and get stronger on her own. Since if she just followed him immediately, that'd make the series instantly boring for me with the overall goal since it would already feel like it would be accomplished. She has her own growth to go through now after all the prejudice she had against orcs and now knowing that there are good orcs too out there, just like with humans and how there are bad and good ones and you can't just group them all together, even if degrees are different like with orcs being a lot more aggressive and rowdy for a norm in comparison. Liked her side story with another rogue orc in the side story at the end, where she shows her respect for orcs like Bash and encourages him to be like their Hero, the orcs do have their pride and Bash is definitely a positive influence to them.
The Elf arc is in the next LN volume, hope that one delivers like this one. This wasn't a spectacular, show-stopping volume but for a series with a premise like this and acts as more of a side-project for Rifujin ga Magonote, this was decent and definitely exceeded my low-expectations of being dumb and fun.
the beauty is that it is made by rifujin (mushoku tensei author)
