This was the greatest episode so far this season. It has it all! I really dug how they pulled off the whole alternative 1930s universe twist to this serial and it ended on a nice cliffhanger too. Overall great story with well-directed sequences.

On to Part 2 next week!

Big Raidou Kuzunoha vibes here. Maybe we might even get to see a demon or two.

I read that this season of Lupin is gonna be 6 months long. That explains the lack of serialization and those atrocious CG cars from the 1st two episodes. I guess they want to tell whatever story they feel like, while making the budget last a long time. I just wish they didn't imply that we would get another serialized season by bringing back Albert and setting up a major foe in Holmes. That was in poor taste.

I love Lupin, so I am all in on wacky adventures in different times. But the balance is off. Lupin is usually weaker or as strong as the others in his gang. Dodging Jigen's bullets and making Goemon look dumb hasn't been shown in a long, long time. I'm not a fan of getting rid of the rock paper scissors dynamic they had going on. Also, this cut rate past tense Fujiko ain't it. I guess we get another chance to see why Fujiko is the only woman who keeps Lupin coming back over and over.

Other than that, I just want to watch Lupin do cool shit. If we are doing wacky antics, I am going to enjoy it as appointment anime watching. It's almost like back in the day, when you had to watch Lupin when the TV channel told you it was available. Now I can lower my expectations and just have fun. Hopefully the calling cards are brought back as well.

This was a really cool episode, though I imagine i'd like it more if I read Akechi Kogoro stories. Before Goemon showed up I thought he had been genderbent! Speaking of, Goemon shows up in the very first scene of the episode behind Lupin, so I think he's not playing any character and is himself.

I mean, Parts IV and V both had 24 episodes and aired in 5 and a half months so what's the big idea here? I think the whole story stuff will be part of the second cour of the show? My two cents here.

Edit: I talked to the guy that wrote this episode on twitter and he said this:

So this is the start of a mini arc in which Lupin and the gang gets teleported into the Showa era of Japan except some of the characters go by different name, but still have the same archetype. Lupin is still Lupin although he's know as the Gold Mask. Jigen works for the Japanese military while Zenigata works for the Tokyo PD. Fujiko on the other hand goes by the name of Black Lizard. Looks like all of the characters are playing a cat and mouse game of who gets to the ancient clock first. Goemon is probably the only person other than Lupin that is playing as himself while he acts like a bodyguard.

As a fan of Japanese history I loved this episode and I can't wait to see the second part.

Another absolute banger episode.

I really wonder, why are people so scared that the team forgot about the story they set up in the first two episodes? In what instance has the Lupin series, especially with the last 2 seasons, initiate a story only to leave it unfinished? Have some faith dudes, come on. You know they will make this work and you know the Holmes story is gonna be great.

Just nitpicking but Lupin is OP as hell, he's fought Goemon and lived mutliple times. And as good as Jigen is he does miss, hell one time in Part 2 he and Goemon were defeated by a very motivated Zenigata who only had handcuffs. I don't see anything unusual with the power scaling, plus they aren't even the real Jigen and Goemon.

As for the episode it was fantastic. Very classic Lupin zaniness and craziness. For the complaints about the main story, I'm sure they'll get back to it soon. If I HAD to guess where the complains about the main story are stemming from, it's the difference between Part 5 and Part 6. Part 5 focused on the main story for more episodes and then had a clear marker for "filler" episodes. I feel like the 3 episodes weren't enough to hook the main story in my mind as opposed to Part 5's first arc. But I'm sure it'll be great once it starts to get back to it.

same here, I'm a huge megaten fan. it's set in the same time period as the kuzunoha games, hence the similar feel. makes me wonder if there are more anime set in 1930.

This was a pretty fun episode. Going back in time to the 1930s(?) is pretty interesting and seeing how each character is shown is pretty interesting. So far it has me hooked and waiting for what follows!

Btw, Goemon's only line gave me some serious part 2 dub vibes XD

So we got a Lupin Isekai after all, haha. Not quite sure what to make of this episode, but it sets up many opportunities for the part 2 of this caper. There is the main mystery of what's going on with the alternate world, and then there is the mystery of the episode itself, though those two mysteries may very possibly be linked. It probably has something to do with the special clock.

I had some issues with the episode, but they may very well be explained by the next episode, so I will hold off judgement until then. Until then, this episode was a huge breath of fresh air from the last two one-off episodes. Hopefully part 2 of this case won't disappoint.

I hope you are correct. Lupin at its worst will always be worth the watch. 6 months is 2 cours so my sense of time was off. They can do plenty with that much time. Thanks for reaching out and getting us that info.

The rock paper scissors dynamic is my favorite part of the gang. Lupin is the strongest sometimes, but most of the time he's the joker card who plays his part. I think next episode, Lupin will find these new characters to be on his level. You make solid points that I agree with tho. Lupin's story is always shifting, so anything can take place. Which is why Zenigata succeeds from time to time.

I was just really impressed by how they kept the story going last season and commented on the world we live in today. They almost got the formula perfect, so my expectations got pretty high for this go around. Lupin is always worth our time, so we have a lot to forward to. And nitpicking is fun.

Demon Slayer's time period is close to that time. But I think your real question is are there any great anime set in that time period. The only one I could recommend is 91 days, but it takes place in NYC not Japan.

Fingers crossed that we get another Raidou Kuzunoha game or a remake. We got a remake of Nocturne as well as SMT V, so anything is possible.

I could watch a whole series of Lupin versus Akechi Kogoro. Sherlock who? (Yes, I know one is based on the other lol.)

Imagine writing a great Lupin episode and Ranpo tribute and having to apologize to randos on twitter. Sheesh.

Taishou Yakyuu Musume. (Taisho Baseball Girls) uses the time period and it's clashes between traditional Japanese culture and the new Western influenced culture to turn this cute girls playing baseball series into a pretty good show.

There are other anime that take place in Japan and partly in this time period - Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju, Kono Sekai no Katasumi ni (In This Corner of the World), and Millennium Actress (I think).

Otome Youkai Zakuro is an alternative history fantasy series set during this time period. It features youkai pairing with military offices to fight demons and was a decent show.

Because this is a terrible way to draw in new viewers (wich is the point of having new parts come out without the need to have watched previous parts). New viewers will think that it will mostly be gag episodes with some main plot sprinkled along the way, when it should be the other way around. This kind of business will only keep the hardcore fans that have no standards and will watch anything just because it has Lupin's face stamped on the tincan.

I can't call myself a veteran watcher of Lupin III, but at least part V was able to properly balance the arcs and have one gag episode in between arcs. Lupin's game took 5 episodes of continuous story along with introducing a very endearing and interesting character such as Ami. In part VI we've had only 2 episodes introducing Sherlock and hyping his name up, along with 4 continuous gag or non plot wise episodes.

Speaking for myself, I'll wait until it's finished and just ask for an episode list of actual story-focused episodes and watch the gag episodes later on with the recommendation of non fanboys that will shill anything Lupin related. Heck, the fact that the number of comments in the most recent episodes is going on a nose dive in numbers, pretty much could be related to people dropping it or at least waiting until it's done.
