The title pretty much says it all. I want a taste of the series that inspired the Lion King but don't want to watch over 50 episodes of it. Do you think just watching this movie would do the trick?

Yes, as the movie more or less the complete original story from the second half of 2vol manga. And if I remember it has everything meaningful and the best from it. Haven't watched the TV series but I think the story differs alot from the original manga. And this is a perfect adaptation of that part.

This information is not entirely accurate. I just went through all of it my self so let me clear things up. This film is based from the 2nd half of Osamu Tezuka's manga. It is a practical 1:1 adaptation of the source material with the exception of the small epilogue. Understand though as this is only half of the manga story line, there will be key information and character building that you will be missing unless you either Read Chapters 1-10 or watch the first 60's Tv show which is a very loose adaptation of the 1st half of the manga with the majority of it containing filler as was the norm of most anime series that aired in the 60's.

My personal recommendation would be to read Chapters 1-10, and then watch this film and then finally read the epilogue which is a few pages on the last chapter for the most definitive way to experience the complete story.
