really love interstellar futuristic sci-fi space stories like this, anyone have recommendations for series that share a resemblance to this one?

You should watch Space Dandy. Dowman Sayman was a fan of this anime and I'm pretty sure it inspired him to write Babylon made wa Nankounen .

For anime: Cosmos Pink Shock and Kaiba, I guess
For manga:

A heartwarming space adventure, fully in watercolor.
Also, parts of Tezuka's Hi no Tori (Phoenix). Maybe something like Space Ship EE by Aya Takano. It's not an absolute resemblance but you may like these.

Sazan to Suisei no Shoujo, which is licensed by Seven Seas, and Nekomura Hakase no Uchuu Ryokou (untranslated).

if we are talking about anime, literally only space dandy from what i've seen.
japan basically never fucking releases anything like this its super disappointing, japan went from being very interested in cyberpunk to being completely devoid of it, and even when it is futuristic, its ALWAYS some mecha space opera thing, instead of hard sci fi or comedy.
after all this is based on "hitch hikers guide to the galaxy" you can't get this type of humor in most japanese works.

if you don't care about the story style and humor, kanata no astra is also very similar, with a group of stranded spacefarers trying to find their home planet, it gives a similar feel of being away from home etc. but not the same.
