I'm not sure if a post similar to this was made before, but I'm still a bit confused as to why they decided to end the show this way. I've heard something about the manga not being too popular, so it was pointless to give the show a faithful adaptation after the first season (correct me if I'm wrong). I find that extremely hard to believe through since the manga is pretty high on the list in terms of popularity on this site. Of course, I understand that MAL doesn't truly reflect how well or popular a series is, but I'd assume it'd be somewhere close. I've also heard of another possibility such as the first season of the anime not being all too well-received in Japan. Again, I'd like to clarify that I'm unsure if these are true at all, but they do make sense from a business standpoint. Anyways, I'd like to know if anyone knows what really happened behind the scenes or realistically what might've happened which lead to the show going down this direction?

As far as I knew, the manga was very popular in Japan, due to the fact that its premise was outside of WSJ standards, even in the sales rankings was doing very well. The first season adapted the original material faithfully (as investigated, as I haven't read the manga yet) but for some reason, the second season wanted to take an original path with the consent of the author, which made them go very wrong with it. Maybe they wanted to take TPN to a point beyond what the original manga left behind, but it didn't turn out very well, that's what I think.

No one knows for sure since neither the author nor studio have given an official statement as to what went on behind the scenes. But people have plenty of theories. Some people think it’s because the manga ended and anime only exists to sell manga. Others think it’s because they didn’t have the confidence or budget to animate Goldy Pond. Etc. but it’s important to keep in mind that these are just theories and nothing has been officially confirmed.

It’s definitely not due to the series being unpopular/unprofitable considering the manga has sold 32 million copies and has been in the top 10 best selling manga for the last 3 years and so far is the 6th best selling manga of 2021. Not to mention the large number of TPN events and exhibitions that have happened in Japan in the last few months which surely wouldn’t have happened if the series wasn’t popular/profitable.

I’m not sure how well received the first season was in Japan, but I do know that the season 1 DVD/Blu-Ray sold poorly which may have been part of the reason season 2 turned out so bad, but as I said before, nothing has been officially confirmed.

That clears up a lot, and I'm glad to know the series is still thriving in popularity. Much appreciated!
