How does the Duke's curse work

At the beginning of ep 5 it was stated that anything he touches will die plants, animals, humans there are no exceptions so in the same episode we see him decay a rose while wearing his gloves but later in the same ep he has his gloves on picks up a stick to help him balance himself on ice however it did not decay or wither and since he was able to decay an already dead flower we know that object does not have to be a living thing so how does his curse work

I know where you‘re coming from, but I think they just simply forgot that a flower who got picked isn‘t really alive anymore 😅

The curse is really simple as you stated, whatever is in direct contact with him will die, even through clothes the curse works accept if you’re wearing metal or something as shown in one episode where he goes in the town. As for the rose i think it’s just a stylistic choice but if you can’t accept that then here is my explanation: Flowers even after cut if treated properly can still grow roots so the rose was not dead, death for plants is withering and that’s what happens to the rose after the duke touched it, as for the stick it was dead, no matter how much time and care you would give it the stick would never grow roots so that’s why it stayed the same. Also the curse isn't something like disintegration like after you touch something it crumbles, but the curse just kills them, as shown by the rose which just withered and lost it’s color.

P.S. I am not a manga reader and this was my own conclusion after watching the show.

The easiest explanation is anything that come in contact with him will instantaneously die. And if there is a thick enough barrier between him and something/one the effects wouldn’t work but it would take a lot of layers. But there was one exemption from the manga that i don’t wanna spoil for the anime only peeps.
