[Rumor] "had friction between lead creative voices" the problems of Wonder Egg Priority production

Wonder Egg Priority the show had... problems. Some big ones. Dumped too much of its sci-fi plot at the rear to the point of ending on something that feels more like a vague recollection glossing over everything than a coherent story. Had friction between lead creative voices too

And yet, most episodes were a fascinating departure from the norm in content & form for TV anime. At its best, a bewitching show that some marginalized viewers (and staff!) got to find empowering. Not sticking the landing, even jumping in the wrong direction, can't take that away

Wonder Egg Priority *the project* is a story of embarrassing mismanagement. No one above stepped in to intervene, let alone assist, an inexperienced team that was too ambitious to meet TV anime's strict deadlines. Without fundamental change, it at least demanded a major delay

By the time any delays happened, the strained team had finished multiple episodes hours before the broadcast, relying on people like Kerorira transcending human limits & tapping into literal fan communities overseas to share the burden. The finale barely made it after 3 months

Was WEP worth it? I'm glad it exists, and I know a lot of people in that team who walk off this project with positive feelings, but I think that comes down to the human (and technical!) excellence of the people they got to work with. Everything surrounding that is *unjustifiable*

Not the first anime to send people to the emergency room, and on a fundamental level it's only exacerbating chronic problems, but it *did* tread scary new paths to address those issues and it's a fkn bummer it happened to a project that could have been such a great experience

Also: I'm seeing people conflate WEP's production and writing debacles as if the latter had gone downhill at the end of a consequence of the former, which is sort of the opposite. Conceptual level materials were lagging way behind schedule since before it was even announced

A team led by rookies had big ideas they struggled to materialize since the start. The fact that its excellent animation (in sheer draftsmanship but also in how well it embodied those ideas) held up for as long as it did fooled viewers into thinking everything was A-OK ​at first
