Full disclosure here: I have yet to watch anything past the 1st season of "Goblin Slayer" and have yet to read any of the Light Novels.

AS A WARNING, PLEASE BE ADVISED THIS ENTIRE POST CONSISTS OF SPOILERS!!!

READ ON AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!

I just recently re-watched "Goblin Slayer" and I have a high suspicion that Goblin Slayer might actually be illiterate. Granted it's possible he could have some literary knowledge and comprehension of a few simple words and even names. But this could honestly be a character trait that is hidden just beneath the surface that has shaped his Goblin slaying career.

It's Assumed Goblin Slayer began adventuring at a very young age, with little means, so it would be understandable that he would be illiterate. Kids of low means in some Central American cities even today barely make it through grade school, so stands to reason that in a fantasy medieval world, kids would probably be even less educated living out in the boonies.

Now let me elaborate on my theory bit...

If you paid close attention to the story it's made pretty clear that hunting goblins is considered an undesirable low ranking job. The story makes it a point, that Adventurers usually pass on Goblin quests simply because of their nuisance and generally being more trouble than they’re worth. As well, the series goes out of it's way to show the dubiousness and heinous acts the goblins would commit, going well beyond the “all paths are gray” sophistry of most anime titles. On top of this, the series makes it seem that no high ranking Adventure would even bother with Goblins for the belief that it's completely beneath them.

As the story progresses you see Goblin Slayer in the morning always waiting in the back of guild hall for the daily release of new quests. Every other Adventure seems to flock to the guild counter almost fighting over the most desirable quest that either pay the most or help them quickly rank up. But not Goblin Slayer. Instead Goblin Slayer waits for the swarm of adventures to disperse then only after does he go up to guild counter and directly asks the Guild Girl if there are any Goblin quests.

This is when it 1st dawned on me.... Goblin Slayer is probably illiterate. This obviously is just a theory... But even when Goblin Slayer receives a letter or some form of correspondence he either pockets it instantly (making you think he might read it later) or he takes it directly to Guild Girl for her to read to him.

From the beginning of his Career as an Adventure, Guild Girl was probably the only one who knew he was illiterate at the guild.

Looking on to more evidence... There was a narration by Goblin Slayer talking about how when he was a child that he would grow up to become an adventure, fighting monsters and eventually become strong enough to defeat dragons as well as become a hero.

But then his narration digresses, doubting himself if he could even become a hero. This is when I thought to myself why not? One logical reason could stem from illiteracy. This hidden character trait could have originally dampened his career. With the exception of Guild Girl and most likely his childhood friend and her uncle, Goblin slayer probably hid this handicap from anyone else he met maybe out of insecurity or any other ambiguous reason.

Without being able to really read or write one would never be able quickly snatch up the most desirable daily quests to quickly rank up or benefit the most financially. This probably left mostly only Goblin related quest to take on. Goblin Slayer probably earned his name strictly based on this fact. Climbing the ranks to Sliver because the only quests left for him to take were mainly slaying Goblins. Maybe after realizing this Goblin Slayer just decided to only ever specialize in slaying Goblins.

Now looking back there was never a clear moment in the series where the audience sees Goblin Slayer ever actually reading anything other then looking at maps. Most the time when he is handed any type of paper he barely even looks at it. As an example...

The only other moment I can remember...
When talking to the High Elf there is a short moment where he quickly lurks towards the Wall where all the Quests are posted during the mid day. But at most, all it looks like is Goblin Slayer just glancing at it.

Unless I have completely over looked anything, I can't really remember any other time he has held anything that remotely resembles paper other then maps or that one time where...

I know this is technically just some mindless trivia to ponder on but if anyone has any input, I would be interest in reading what others think.

There's a high chance he is bc he always asks the quest giver if there r any goblin quests so I wouldn't be surprised. Idk of he asked what words were on the scroll cuz if he didn't, he can read.

It's been a while since I saw it, but doesn't he use magic scrolls... You need to read them to use them, right? (edit : sorry, missed your last spoiler)
Other than that, good theory, well thought out. GS was trained by that old goblin in a cave, likelyhood is that reading wasnt high on their priorities list.

I did touch up on this point in one of the spoilers...

If you recall correctly it was said in the series that...
Also Goblin Slayer wasn't the one who wrote it so the knowledge of even the "phrase" that might have needed to be "recited" could have been told to him before hand. The series left a lot about the magic scroll in ambiguity.

Re-watching that moment in the series he never actually read anything out loud. At least nothing to the effect of a believable enchantment. The only thing that is revealed is watching him unroll the scroll followed by a blinding magical light. Unless Goblin Slayer saying to the Ogre at that moment "You're a fool!" is the magical enchantment needed to be said. But honestly I doubt this is the case. It would be kind of lame if those were the words needed to be said to activate the scroll.
