I'm seeing 6 movies with 5 still pending. Is this series really that popular?

in Japan, im assuming so. They sell merch pretty well, and while I dont know much about BD sales, they probably sold well too, considering how many sequels we're getting. There was also a concert a while back featuring Yuki Kajiura and Void_Chords playing select PriPri scores

It's been a pretty common trend lately to just make hour or less long "movies" and split them up over multiple releases in theaters. I think it basically guarantees more money because they get ticket sales and then later disc sales. (Girls und Panzer, Date a Bullet, some Pretty Rhythm thing I think all did this too).

In 2019, Yuricon had a separate column for PriPri doujinshi, so I think the franchise is quite popular among at least a certain audience.

I mean the way those rather weak-written action based "cute-girls-doing-anything" shows have usually a very short lifespan. The 300-Years-Slime show will be forgotten the moment the last episode was aired and it would be the same for this show. So to make more with merch and other memorabilia they have to stretch it out as far as possible. The industry simply doesn't have the time to make quality, that's why they reuse the assets. If you want better shows (seeing this in the huge gap between ratings from japan to the west here) then you will have to either wait longer (impossible) or see less shows a season...

I will answer this question since nobody else has.

The anime's BDs sold well above average in Japan, but the show was doomed to obscurity in the west because people thought it was another CGDCT show and refused to give it a try. The choice to make 6 sequel movies isn't a popularity thing as much as it's a scheduling and financial safety net kind of thing. The studio, Actas, has done this exact thing before with Girls Und Panzer. If you add up the runtime for all 6 films you come out to a single anime cour's runtime. The movies share an ongoing plotline so they're basically releasing a second season theatrically instead. Releasing two episodes as a movie cuts down on crunch, eliminates tv broadcasting deals, and ensures quality so I'm all for it even though having to wait a decade to watch the second season to gritty steampunk totally spies is not something I'm too big on.

TL;DR:
Yes in Japan, but it's actually just a glorified second season situation.
Not worldwide.
