I personally enjoyed it as an anime, but this story could definitely be told without the Yasuke title. If they were really focused on yasuke, the show should have solely been about his backstory, none of the magic or mechs stuff. I was hoping on something like a Vinland Saga type historical anime, but it’s Netflix, and seeing stuff like Cannon Busters and LeSean Thomas, it’s not too surprising. Still a decent show in all honesty, but the hype of the story of Yasuke killed it for me.

Agreed. Don't know why mechs and magic were involved with this anime. Pretty much ruined the whole show. But the animations of the fights were not bad, well expected from Mappa. Just wish they would have copied the exact story of the legendary black samurai into an anime :(.

The animation was good, the opening was really well done but the show falls apart cuz of its characters and story's missed potential.yaksuke could have been a great protagonist if we focused alot more on his backstory instead of the time period. We got.The director just jumps around so fast that it's hard to tell at times what even happened. Also in episode 4 he was fighting a War?All of sudden?I legitimately thought a missed an episode.

He was one of the weakest characters in his own show, the little girl, other black guy, robot, bear chick, the other chick all seemed more powerful, and he did not have a really badass moment, quite disappointed but I’ll take any representation I can get, for the meanwhile, it’s back to Afro Samurai 😅

It was trash imo and extremely unenjoyable. I was personally expecting a historical anime due to the fact that its literally named after a historical figure and it features him as its protagonist. People have said to me that not very much was known about his life so a historical anime wouldn't be easy to make, but if LeSean Thomas was going to create an original story it should've been grounded. Certain magical elements I wouldn't mind, considering that stuff like that is a part of Japanese culture, but mechs are just straight up bullshit. If fucking 10 foot fully operated robots exist, why doesn't everyone just use guns and lasers.

If you enjoyed it good for you, I'm not attacking you for liking it, that's just my thoughts on it.

I think this show could've been hella good its just that the story and lore is all over the fucking place. The creator of Yasuke shouldve just done a historical fiction piece instead of this crazy ass fantasy and sci-fi mix. It feels so unnatural to see Yasuke fight a normal war then enter this grand conspiracy of a priest sending mongolian mechas and werewolf russian women after him. They barely explain any of this shit which makes it harder to even take it seriously. The opening by Thundercat and Flying Lotus is at least fire tho so props to the OST.

I’m just going to say that i’d never thought in my life that i would find an anime more rushed than UQ holder. Then yasuke came, Leaving the biggest backstory gaps in history.

I mean, it's alright? It has solid audiovisuals that make it feel like a psychedelic instrumental hip-hop and jazz fusion album. The characters have decent dynamics and the lead works fine enough. It's just that the narrative is kinda rushed, haphazard, and dumb, and the characters are only kinda alright but you don't even know half their names until right as 3 of them are about to die. It's fine-ish, mainly cuz I had a decent time and really dig the aesthetic and some of the action and character dynamics here and there. I can't say it's the dumpster fire MAL is making it out to be, but I hope LeSean Thomas's next project where he brings together a bunch of black artists and creatives ends up having a tighter script than this show does.

I also think people just have this weird misconception that if something is historically based, it must be purely realistic when historical works are allowed to take liberties if it's alternate history (Yasuke) or is trying to play up certain aspects (Vinland Saga and how the feats its characters accomplish are akin to Viking and medieval dark age level legends like Beowulf). The problem with Yasuke is that the mecha stuff in particular feels pretty haphazard and unexplained, and the spirituality magic stuff also feels rather threadbare. Also, it's in the synopsis (on shit like wikipedia, not even MAL) but not in the marketing.

The trailer had the mechs and the mystical aspects. If you're "let down" because you were surprised by them, then you weren't paying attention.
That fault is on you.

It depends on what you classify as "good." It looked good in terms of visuals if that's important to you

Although it could have been better, I think this anime is still very good for a short anime. Visually it’s great and I enjoyed the story. I do think they could have done without the mechs and wish they would have focused on Yasuke himself more but I did enjoy this anime and would recommend it to someone who is wanting something short and visually appealing.

The show felt very bland, and mecha stuffs felt absolutely out of the place. I was excited for this anime and I was expecting something like Nioh in terms of action and all.

yeah I haven't even finished episode 2, and I'm already kind of sick of it and can see where it's going.bthe mechs and magic just make no sense. Like you said, I was hoping for some vinland saga type stuff. I really don't like supporting the idea that anime outside of japan rarely succeeds, but this just pushes that thought even further. (The director was American, right?)

I would say the animation is splendid and that's the only positive. The story is weak, something that it being 6 episodes, doesn't help. I, along with a lot others expected maybe a historical epic, and felt cheated with this show. I think that's the primary reason for people not liking it.

I actually enjoyed Yasuke a lot. People have high expectations of what constitutes a historical anime. It might be interesting to note that Gintama on this website is listed as a historical anime. So is Sengoku BASARA, which also has a mech character and not much explanation for him. But they're enjoyable. Yasuke is a lot more history rich than people are giving it credit for. The main antagonist's identity is somewhat a spoiler (even though they identify the antagonists as being part of the Kamakura Hojo in the very first scene of the first episode), but she is an extremely powerful figure in history though obscure to a lot of people. Glad to see this anime giving her attention! There were also a few shoutouts to other events like Oda Nobukatsu's unsuccessful attacks against forces in Iga Province. For me, the biggest bonus of this Yasuke anime was seeing someone provide him with a name and an ethnicity instead of just saying he was an African samurai. They researched the historians' theories that Yasuke may have been of the Yao people and gave him a name consisting of Portuguese, Arabic, and Mozambican elements (I don't know the specific language group "Baloi" belongs to). It is a cool name to me because it reflects the competing interests of Christians and Muslims in that region in that time period.

At the end of the day, I like watching Sengoku Era anime because I'm a big Sengoku Era enthusiast, and pretty much no anime or video game or what have you has portrayed it accurately and "exact". The real Sengoku Era is full of horrific war crimes and massacres. But for the purpose of making enjoyable media, people like to throw in things like overly powerful swordsmen and "samurai honor" and noble army campaigns. Anime in particular is a media to explore the more fantastical side of creative liberties that live-action inhibits - realism is what NHK Taiga Dramas are for, and even they delve into fantasy often to deliver a fun story to the viewers. (Btw, Yasuke appears briefly in the NHK drama Gunshi Kanbei if anyone's curious).

I don't think this anime did much differently than what I have seen in other Sengoku anime, and I understand if perhaps people wanted that difference, but I just personally don't fault it for using magic and mechas and werewolves. It's a cool story about a black historical figure told with black voices, and I rather enjoyed the way they used their voices.

This anime was a letdown for me as they introduced Mechs and Robots in a Jidaigeki setting which totally doesn't make sense. 6 episodes are also too few. Therefore I decided to make my own story with a Black Protagonist albeit I intend to make my work an RPG game instead since we already have two anime with Black MCs but not one RPG yet with a Black Protagonist. You can check out character designs for my game in this thread : https://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=1919919

It was decent, yes it was totally overhyped as MAPPA's track record recently has been good, but i would'nt say it was the worse anime they've made, for six episodes it was pretty decent and had great visuals

I really don't care about historical correctness and I think the idea of a black samurai who tries to save a girl with magical abilities from a demoness is pretty interesting. I also liked the part about Yasuke's past and his interaction with the woman who was killed by him.

But...

A christian mutant priest who hires a russian shapeshifter bear girl, an unfunny robot sidekick and an african shaman to catch the girl and an army that fights with swords, bows, arrows and skyscraper-sized mechas with blaster cannons... What the fuck is going on?

It could've been a decent anime without the priest, the mechas and the robot and with double the amount of episodes to have proper interactions between the characters and the time to develop the story, but it's just trash as it is right now.

for me it was pretty decent tbh. sure the story was just not there at times and the characters were weak in terms of personalities, but i was expecting that mainly because of the director. i was sceptical when i saw his name as the director and i was correct once again. cool ideas bad execution. maybe if you are unable to execute so many ideas in such a small amount of time just dont do them. i was not expecting a masterpiece by any means.
Now about the mechas and magic i still dont know how people were not aware of it since we can see it in the trailers and the synopsis of the show. i guess people do not watch them or do not read about them when they are about to watch a show. i did it so i was ready. next time do it as well.
The show had nice visuals, some cool stuff about yasuke and a really great ost. it was one of those anime you just turn off your brain and just accept that what you are watching looks and sounds nice aka another god of highschool.
