DISCLAIMER : I did not write this to tell you to not watch this show or to tell you how good or bad the anime is. I wrote this only to react to some facts in the anime.

The "you lose you die" thing. That's false, even for gladiators. Fighters were trained a lot before they could have their first fight. This costs A LOT. You're not gonna throw money and invest in something you might lose as easily. There were almost no "fight to death". It was more like fight until one says he lost. It was a lot more like our actual wrestling : a show where the two fighters know each other (maybe they trained together) and where the goal is to offer a good show and a good entertainment. There were accidental deaths and sometimes fight to death, but extremely rarely.

The "thumbs up, thumbs down". False again. This is a very popular misconception. There are some remains/texts that show that sometimes the audience was asked at the end of the figth "Was that a good fight?" and the crowd answered with noise. But no "thumbs up thumbs down". There might have been signs with the hand/arm to show who the crowd wanted to be the winner/loser.

Some things are good : there were indeed referees, the fights were not (msot of the time) in big stadiums but in smaller arenas.

What do you think about the historical accuracy of this show ?

It's anime so I didn't find historical accuracy to be the top priority

I was thinking of making a comment on emperor Nero as one of the most cruel emperors of all time. But historical accuracy is not the point. It seems like a good show so far.

If historical accuracy was important to me, I would not watch anime to learn about it. Nonetheless, this show seems good and I will stick with it.

In general, I agree with you, but the fact that they said that the thumbs up/thumbs down is historical triggered me a little bit as I am a history student ^^.

Well, that's another popular misconception, popularized by shows like Gladiator. I dont say Nero was the kindest. But his cruelty is nowadays questioned by historians. He is now more depicted as a megalomaniac, with a high opinion of himself.
In the show, Nero is a depicted as a child. However, at 17 he was married and absolutely not a kid. Besides, I found that he had a bit too modern ways of thinking and was a bit too naive : you dont discover fights when youre 17, your parents bring you when youre a child.

I agree that historical accuracy isnt the point of the show, I was simply reacting to some facts ^^. I'll continue watching it, I'm curious about where they go with the show.

Well, when the characters speak modern Japanese instead of Vulgar/Classical Latin that's a sign that the historical accuracy is not the selling point. 🤭

From time to time when I watch movies set in other times I've always had a discomfort feeling because the historical background is not accurate but if an entertainment product was created with this purpose in mind it would be a documentary instead.

Youre welcome !

I could have been more picky and annoying : a blond greek seems quite strange (the one-eyed general and his son), the armor of soldiers (such armors with metal plate with muscle pattern was VERY expensive and common soldiers had an armor made of mail or leather), the use of legionaries (no army was allowed in the city of Roma, olny the Pretorian Guard which was reserved for the emperor's use and not "given" to senators or rich men like the owner of Cestus), ...

But I chose to be light ^^

A few people will always come to appreciate topics about the historical accuracy of a source of media. Even though this show is mostly based on fiction and an imagined setting and persons, the "fan-material" for the show comes from original history. So be proud of your knowledge because you know a lot! :D

You can hear quite a few Latin phrases in Thermae Romae. When Lucius thinks aloud or talks to other Romans, he uses Japanese, but when he talks to Japanese people he uses Latin.
