Source is Light Novels, I don't think the manga has progressed any further than the anime did, but yes, their relationship definitely progresses in later volumes of the LN

I would definitely say lesbians. This is by all means a yuri but for some reason MAL has a good amount of shows not listed as shoujo ai even though they should be.
