I've read three volumes so far, and the story is really good, but can't the author go at least one chapter without mentioning figures like Machiavelli, Sun Tzu or other historical tacticians? Sometimes the novel takes five pages to cite some a real life source, when it could be done on one page with author's own words. It is important to explain motifs behind character's actions, but it's like the creator thinking he's using his 'superior knowledge' of historical tacticians and feeds his knowledge to readers like they were infants that just learned to walk and know nothing.

If I wanted to know more about medieval/ancient tactics I'd go to directly read the book author loves like 'The Prince' or other reliable source, not light novel, which main purpose is entertainment. Obviously it's my own personal opinion.

Do you think it's a good thing that this light novel tries to go into educating people about something they don't necessarily want/have a need to know?

It is a good thing duh. History is also entertainment. This direction that the author is taking is good. You can't expect everyone to know Machiavelli, Sun Tzu, and the rest in an in-depth manner. Surface depth? Probably but at a low-chance. Using historical figures as basis for a character's actions while citing so much about the historical figure is alright. It makes the reasoning of action just more and more understandable. Putting myself in the shoes of a writer like that, I'd say it would be good to point out the reasoning. It would be helpful as well to the audience to lay out historical background to the figures and it's a big plus to readers that are interested in these historical people. If you know so much about the said historical figures or annoyed of how long it is, just skim or skip it.

I completely agree as a political / history major I can skim through parts just fine but reading them gives me a give on how this author interprets Machiavelli which I personally find interesting. (I'm referring to that mini-thesis that was in ?Volume 4?)
