I thoroughly enjoyed LoGH, and I didn't even realize it was a space opera when I first saw it lol. Is this something I can get into? (For reference, I never got into the Star Wars story, but I might hop on the Mandalorian train since many people said that it can stand alone on its own).

Hey! Both series are Space Operas, but they're quite different.

If I remember correctly, LoGH is more about fleet battles and showing the two opposing political ideologies. It's also about the rise and fall of Yang and Reinhardt, how they put their names in history books, and corrupt politicians/leaders. The series shows a lot of both sides (FPA perspective VS Galactic Empire perspective).

Yamato feels way more fantasy-like. It's an adventure in space, a journey/trek from A to B, facing many adversities along the way. There's also some room for politics and philosophy though. The story is way more focused in the Yamato crew and makes us root for them, while LoGH feels more "gray" (none of the sides is 100% good or bad). There's some romance too, and unlike other anime shows, there are actual pairings after season 1 (well, LoGH kinda too, like Yang and Frederica). Battles in season 1 are usually between the Yamato and Garmillan ships, while season 2 (2202) has more fleet battles (like LoGH).

Personally, I really like both series, and while they share quite some similarities, you can't expect a story like LoGH from Yamato, or vice versa.

The only real similarity between the two is that both feature space but yamato is still an amazing series and a great example on how to do a remake right.
