THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
The skate-leading Ionodai boys at training camp to prepare for the Grand Prix Series skating finals...and as usual, Maeshima gets ahead of himself. This is where Sasugai's strategist scrutiny and Terauchi's routine team plan comes into play in order to lead the Ionodai team higher up the ranks.

The short program distaste...it's no wonder Maeshima became a prodigy...a copycat-cum-modified one at best, and it's part of the many frustrations that Himekawa has against him. Both have to come to a compromise, or the entire team dynamic would crumble.

Tomo Kubota looks like the kind of easy-going, easy intimidated character, but all he needs is validation to prove his stance in the ice rink. and that is the case with him against Maeshima on the short program with a hair's loss.

Learn to work together, or risk getting backfired by expectations. And the finals match is on.

I'm so in love with Jonouchi and I'm glad that I get to see his ass, would love to own that someday.

I guess by devoting training to but one episode we can get immediately to the grand-prix series. Nice, and I didn't mind the condensing it all to just a few seconds there since really, all we had to do was find a way for Maeshima to overcome his weakness.

Also lol at Sasugai always being the one to save Maeshima. Good message.

First half of the match: Tomo did it perfectly and Maeshima messed up.
Second half of the match: Tomo did it perfectly and Maeshima did it perfectly.
Result: Maeshima wins.

I bet they will mess up on the matches too but then do a cool trick and win.

5 episodes in and Maeshima still hasn't evolved in any way.

Good thing we got to see their bare asses during that training montage, that counts as character development, right?

Dropped.

Looks like we're finally seeing some character development from Maeshima... just in time too, bc I was so close to dropping the show because of his ridiculous attitude. I guess I'll keep watching for a little while longer.

Kiriyama looked like he wanted to apologize to Maeshima with the chocolate but it was pretty awkward for him.

I was about ready to drop this anime, but at least the last scene of the ep was the anime skipping all the way to the first match of the GP. At least now the rest of the episodes should focus on the competition matches

I wouldn't say this anime is terrible, I went in with pretty low expectations to begin with. It's just so painfully mediocre and boring. 5 episodes in and the plot has barely progressed at all it feels like.
The animation also seems to be getting worse. That scene showing the Maeshima and Tomo skating, visualized by the colored lines was interesting, but it also could have been an excuse for the animators not to animate the skating.

I also don't get the purpose of the older coach. He's so incredibly useless it's frustrating to watch

I think his coaching style is more the subtle comment that is able to inspire a kid (Tomo receiving the coaches praise then going to hone in on the basics later to then compete against maeshima).

Maeshima mimicked Tomo's moves and won because Tomo panicked when he saw that I guess? I'm not sure how points work.

Yep, its already been decided. Maeshima entering the core team as the second lead and ready for the first match!

Even though his personality kinda annoying, and the way he learnt something rather unbearable to be seen. In the end, with the power of mc (copy-modified-nonsense), and a little help from the damn Sasugai, he can be changed. Poor Tomo, he got a talent and really determinated to help his beloved senpai. Alas, he was against the mc. Ofc he couldn't win that short program challenge and forcefully to give everything up to Maeshima hands. Well, fine plot, even though its still very rushed, forced, and too cliche, its just so fine with a bearable minimum standard.

So lets see their first official match, then!

Maeshima was such a pain this episode but thankfully, it seems he acknowledged he was being a childish brat and will start working as part of the team from now on.

Some part of me still wanted Kubota to win tho. I have no idea how he didn't score higher when he did everything perfectly, unlike Maeshima who messed up during the first part of the program.

This is the worst anime I've seen in a while. Terrible op thats mostly just a black screen, boring characters, usage of cheap royalty free music that's an obvious ploy to cut costs, an annoying lead that sucks at thing he's supposed to be good at and getting by because its in the script, and just the sheer audacity of calling it a show about skating when no one skates.

We see people standing on the ice, but they literally cut away this entire episode and showed us people watching the skating and talking about it. Two people were competing for a place on the team, and we don't even see them skate. We get people talking or a diagram of where on the ice they are.

There is no effort in this show. DROPPED.

Not sure why they don't just have Tomo be a third lead since he obviously has better fundamentals and consistency, while Maeshima is literally just *skating by* on plot armor, yet again.

I want to like this show, but we're nearly halfway through and it's still. So. BORING. Meh. I've watched this far, may as well finish it.

Hearing Pachabel's Canon so many times brought back nightmares of middle school band. Bleh.

Sadly, I mostly agree with that. Except from 1 or 2 eps, we didnt see much of actual skating scenes. We assume that they are skating and their classmates are watching them, but we see nothin. The animators were really lazy especially on this ep. Still, I will give another chance and continue to watch. I hope things will get better in the next episodes.
