Just finished this one and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The easiest way to describe it for me is that Goblin Slayer is John Wick minus the guns. I would have been fine with this being a stand alone novel since it ends with him getting his nickname and being promoted to Obsidian.

Easter eggs I enjoyed was the ending where the "gods" are playing a game of dice and creating his party members during the epilogue, priestess appearing as a child and unknowingly healing him with her first miracle, and the appearances of Guild Girl, Spearman, Witch, Female Knight, Heavy Warrior, and Rookie Warrior in their earlier years.

I'll be reading Volume 2 over the next few days. The only question I had was who was his master and how did he meet him?

as far as I can remember;his master was in the ex-hero's party or affiliated with the ex-hero(it was in the novels).and I think it was revealed in the very 1st volume of this that when goblin slayer crawled out of the hole he was hiding at while the goblins massacared his village;he tried to leave the village.while leaving,some goblins saw him,he did damage to some goblins;then then rhea's voice "hmm,this boy got promise" or something.then at a swipe,he sent all the gob's head flying.
I assume after that, kid gob slayer begged him to train him how to battle and the rhea agreed .
