| THIS IS A MANGA ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS ANYTHING BEYOND THIS CHAPTER. ---------------------------------------- If I were to describe this chapter succinctly I would say ‘manufactured heroism’. We were able to see Gin enter a rally as a hero, a fighter of justice, one who is praising and recognizing all of his supporters and bringing them into the fight with him. But it was just that, manufactured, artificial, planned. In Gin’s worldview, I don't think he views himself as much better than his opponent, both are willing to manipulate whatever they must to come out on top. Gin has embraced evil in an evil world after all. So I enjoyed that aspect of this chapter. Further, the conversation they had in the car after leaving the rally was also quite interesting. Gin spoke about the desire to be intoxicated by justice and status, realizing the fabrication but ignoring it because they don’t want to remember the reality that no one is willing to take on an opponent of this size. This notion strongly evoked Kurosawa for me, specifically the posse who followed him to his fight early in the manga. Both instances are of people who follow that intoxication, be it intoxication of justice, or intoxication of courage, whatever it may be, because it allows them to forget the futile or crushing reality for a brief moment and feel as though anything is possible... |
