----------------------------------------
Throughout these last chapters, Gin approached another kid down on their luck, and in this case, showed him the rigged nature of the world which I think Morita once touched on by saying it was as if the city itself was crushing him. He showed this kid the error of his ways, trying to create a path out of chance, hurting himself through stupid gambling to soon hurt others when he cannot hurt himself any longer. By Fukumoto expressing, to my understanding, that horse racing is a business that thrives even when all others are dwindling, and by starting with both of his punks doing these stupid gambles, feeling like it's their only way forward while it is really killing them slowly, its effective as heck. In line with this, Gin also showed him the way he is being exploited, by the money he's being loaned, or Gin himself who stole his ticket. Persuading this kid is a pretty exhaustive process, one line that stuck out to me in particular was “the bloods already draining out of your skull.” And of course the enchanting “if you want to change, stick with me.”

Finally, getting through to this kid after all of his struggling and fighting, he does want to change! So following Gin into a money filled truck, with the scouting phase done, we finally understand what this gamble supposedly is! The betting of 30 billion on one race. Charming!

It's also interesting that this is weirdly enough one of the most shocking arcs for me. We got in this flow of Morita’s climb to greatness, it was comfortable, almost too comfortable that it became somewhat stagnant, and suddenly he reached an early climax, he retired, a year goes by, and we are back at the beginning; this time introducing a new kid in similar shoes to where Morita was, and a brand-new gamble. When I think about the intent behind this decision, I can't exactly grapple with it and that’s what makes it so interesting.

I also gave more thought to Gin’s view of evil and it somewhat fascinated me. I can see exactly what he means, from my own experience there is often corruption and selfish people ruling even the best of organizations. By having good intent and working under them, they thrive with their malintent. Typically I think of my biggest lessons from Fukumoto as lessons for me as an individual. That is, how I should live my own life. However, there is a rich amount of thought from Fukumoto when it comes to the collective as well. I feel, as a human, I can be detached from that collective, I try not to worry about consequences, the idea that as long as I live my best, life will be good. But, Gin to Kin especially forces me to look at how I can live morally within a society, it makes me look at the effects or lack thereof I have, or the effects I could have on the world around me. I wrote a paper on food waste inspired by Shin Kurosawa’s wasted bento discussion, my teacher suggested I continue to pursue my thought on the topic, and then I put it to the side. Works like Kurosawa and Gin to Kin, obviously Kaiji as well, have a focus on the world around us, and this has started to inspire me to put more thought on the matter than: ‘live my best as an individual’. We are a people after all, I am not isolated from evil.
