THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
The store owner was introduced as a scary guy, what with booting that couple out of his store and terrifying them + his snake-like eyes, but just like the priestess, he's also kind at heart. Looks like the two of them have some history via their respective careers.

Even though his customer was paying him very well for his origami, he still cared whether the gold was earned legally/morally. Although his interrogation technique was uh... unconventional. Pelting the guy with paper balls and threatening to switch to rocks lol. But even after finding out his customer had a golden bird, he didn't ask for more money or threaten to expose him or anything. He just kept the secret diligently. Good guy at heart!

And the customer / origami apprentice - despite having a bird that can give him infinite gold, he still chooses to live a simple underprivileged life. He only started spending more gold for the origami because folding paper gave his aging mother joy as her health faded. A good kid! And clever too, to disguise chickens as the golden bird so that would-be burglars wouldn't take the real treasure.

The twist that the kid was actually the bird in human form caught me off guard completely. Despite being a magical creature that lived for hundreds of years, he still chose to take care of this old woman as her son and spend her last 7 years with her. Awwww. He realized before how greedy and violent his gold could make the people around him, so he chose to live in poverty with this kind old lady. When he told the store owner that he wasn't keeping the bird against its will, he actually meant that he didn't want to leave the woman alone T.T He even overexerted himself so much that he was dying as well.

I wonder if an overarching plot will emerge, or if the priestess's adventures will be episodic and involve her continuing to help a myriad of magical beings. So far the emphasis of storytelling seems to be on her patients' pasts rather than herself.

had no clue where the story in this episode was going. didn't realize he was the gold bird until literally the moment they told us. it went from a kind of slow story to an "oh damn" in an instant

is the bird heartbroken/depressed? is that why it's sick/dying?
