At the moment the music started to be played in the background, I knew it was Sora & his mom's last moments. Honestly I even expected her to pass away on screen but it'd have been really worse in terms of sadness.

After like 5-6 episodes, we eventually discovered that Kuzu High lost the match but I doubt this is any important right now. How's the team going to survive/evolve remains the major question.

I was really hoping this show was going to do something different with the tragic parent backstory for a change. I guess they had to resort to cliche.

I still love it for the sports stuff and this show definitely does the hype vibe better than most sports anime. But it is disappointing that they built up a parent character so well and even provided a potential route for her to recover and contribute to the team and then it didn't happen.... Waste of an opportunity. Why do authors resort to using the same thing as everyone else to create drama?

What? There arent many sports anime that show a parent dying, as the series goes along, only other one i can think of is Major. Also, I dont think many sports anime show the last conversation a mother has with her son....very NOT typical for the genre at all.

So i have multiple issues with this. Yes the death during the middle of the anime is uncommon in sports anime. However the tragic death of a parent is a very common backstory. It usually happens before the show starts though.

Making it happen during the show doesn't make it unique in a good way. Its basically recycling an overused plot point in a slightly different way. And the issue I have with this is it's creating a very unrealistic situation. Or at least a very difficult scenario to portray well. Where Sora overcomes his grief and still improves and performs so soon after such a loss.

His mum was a good character with a lot of potential to build on and I'm really worried she is essentially going to be forgotten. In essence making the whole development of her character pointless and purely to create a dramatic motivation.

I hope the show proves me wrong and executes it well. But as someone who was considering this to be up there with one of the best sports anime we've had in a long time I cant hide I'm a little disappointed and worried about the direction its going.

Also i just want to cry. :<

Yuka's development won't be wasted. All her interactions with Madoka will play a key role on the future, and a lot of characters will inherit the conclusions and wishes of Yuka. Although, most of that will need to come on future seasons if there ever is any..

The song is not released yet. This is a single by Saji (same group who sang the first ending). It will be released on June 3rd : https://twitter.com/saji_official/status/1265575997145001988.

As I don't know Japanese, I cannot write the title (明日の空へ) in "latin" letters.

Damn, Miss Kurumatani actually left us.
Honestly, the whole sequence wasn't as heartbreaking as I was expecting but still, it was decently executed. Would have been better if we knew what disease she was suffering from tho. It would have made viewers (me included) empathize with her in an easier and deeper way but that's just my opinion.

Quite the eventful episode we had this week. Lots of things were addressed and fortunately, most of them were handled quite decently without ruining the pacing nor the overall heavy mood. My only complain would be with how they tried to needlessly increase even more the "angst" factor by having Madoka nearly being assaulted. It was completely unnecessary but at least, the moment didn't last long thanks to our boy Chiaki.

Also, Tobi deciding to stay at Kuzu was predictable yet reassuring to see. Though truth being told, seeing him showing such strong resolution and optimism just to then jump to the following scene with the basketball club room being on fire was kinda funny xD

Well, they lost the game and there are still 17 eps. left. I have no idea how the story will play out from here on but let's hope things won't go downhill now that one of the plot's main goals is no longer reachable.

Unpredictable title. I was clearly sure they lose the next game against the Yokohama, but now they must win. They had never win since the creation of the team!
I was waiting for the result of the game for a long time, and now i got it and im not happy. With the lose we have death of hero’s mother (f*ck, I literally was praying she will survive). And in last episode she thought that she have found the dream, so i thought “wow, it’s a sign, now she will kill the disease because of having sence to live”, but I just got the second “Angel Beats”. Cruelly.
And finally their club room got burn. I can say, that it is a sign of the new start (bridges burned, nothing to lose, what doesn’t kill us... etc) but i’m afraid of doing predictions now. Anyway, I don’t know what will happen next, I just hope Toby won’t leave them if he will know about cigarettes or something like this.
To resume, 10/10, Interesting
P.S. now it seems like “happy go, ducky” is the words of a hunter.

I'm not gonna address the game being long because I think criticizing pacing is weird in general.

I mean, if your starting point is a total dismissal the crux of my entire post with a handwave because it's "weird" (what does that even mean btw?), of course you're not gonna understand anything I've just explained right there. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

What, your entire post wasnt even about pacing, it was about directing and writing. I heavily disagree with that criticism and thought your analysis of the episode was reductive. Fine, I think pacing is a really silly thing to criticize in anime. I just find it nonsensical.

Decently executed? Sheesh man. Touch crowd over here. The conversation between Sora and his mom felt super real to me. That was executed amazingly imo.

Oh my oh my. That was an emotionally heavy episode. Good stuff. So the school is burning down because of that cigarette... So funny :D And yes, sneaky ninjas were chopping onions. That ending song is phenomenal and fits well.

I'm pretty cheesed that after all those episodes being dragged out that they decided to reveal that they lost like that. Like really... That was pretty lack luster and just thrown in there. I get for the sake of emotional impact for his mom but it could have been better. Also Kite is my boi!

For those still wondering about the song at the hospital, the "romanized" name is "Ashita no Sora" (and sang by Saji as previously said)

We are lucky that the mysterious Anime Parents Death Disease ain't real or we'd all be orphans.

I love how it's never explained. It's always just "she/he has a disease" "F"

Aah shit!

Given the fact that she wanted to see him play this day was giving it away, but no amount of foreshadowing could've prepared me for the feels. The dialogue between Sora and his mom was incredidbly touching. Even as someone working in a hospital, this still got me.

As for the match. Kuzu's loss made this episode even more depressing. Still, congrats to Shinjo, catching up wasn't for naught.

Really excited for the direction this series is going to take now.

Edit: Just realized that Kite refused the offer from the school he wanted to visit before coming to Kuzu, made the scene at the end too badass.

RIP Sora’s mum (;´༎ຶٹ༎ຶ`) that was so sad to see Sora just being there with his dearest mum at the last moments...... I’m glad he was able to be there by her deathbed. Sora thanking his mum was so heart-wrenching. Such a good kid.

Tobi is the best boy. Ugh I love him for what he did. He’s the best!!!!! That whole 1% bet thing was great dialogue. And uwuUuu at that subtle detail of that coach being drunk, he was upset that Sora’s mum had passed away. I guess they hinted at him being in love with her of sorts. That was sad.

Development wise was great this episode. I also liked when Sinjo captain told Chiaki about how his team is great. How respectable. And their faces when their advisor almost caught them smoking LOL

but i’ll probably remember over and over again
you were there and everyone else was there

The author really had no mercy. Those idiots actually managed to burn down the lockerrooms because of some cigarettes. Its upsetting to see the team lose but still understandable considering they only started one month ago. Got pretty emotional seeing Sora and his mother in their final moment together....

didnt feel like talking about this ep when it first came out because i lost my mom not long before so this whole episode spoke to me an a different level and i felt like i had a connection to sora too.

you can throw emotional curveballs like that in a sports anime and it works wonders if pulled off correctly and they did. Especially with the locker rooms up in flames too this was the best episode imo.

This episode really hit like a ton of bricks. Without a doubt, the bond between Sora & his mother has been the best part of this whole experience. I was really hoping this wouldn't happen especially when Yuka said she found her new dream of being Sora's coach. It tore me up so much when she apologized for Sora's height only to be thanked for it. While it's been the biggest defining handicap for Sora, it's also been the driving force for why he's been so passionate about basketball.

Also big respect to Kite for shutting down that other coach. He's been the most relatable character for me and i like how he isn't second guessing where he really belongs.
