Someone's gotta start something here, right?

Just finished the first volume. It's a rare situation where I'm happy I already knew what was coming, because I'd probably be pretty mad otherwise. Still, it was enjoyable for what it was and as the start of the story. I hope to see Sayaka get her happy ending eventually.

Like said above, I would have been pretty angry if I didn’t know Yuzuki was gonna break up with Sayaka, but thankfully because of the main story, we knew.

I haven’t read any light novels besides Konosuba and a little bit of NGNL, but in general I really enjoyed my read of this, can’t wait for volume 2!

I'm amazed at how perfectly this novel expanded on Sayaka's character and in a more general sense captured the stress and uncertainty that comes with accepting who you are in a society that gives you no manual for being yourself.

Also I'm mad at Yuzuki all over again now that I fully know the context of both characters. She drags Sayaka into something that to her is nothing more than a check mark on her bucket list, then assumes it's just a game to Sayaka too. Even worse that she falls into the trap of thinking "loving girls was just a phase for me, so obviously it must be a phase for you too, so just grow up." It's so easy to hate, yet it's so real.

A very simple, earnest but well done light novel (especially considering how the main author for the manga only worked on the art here).

It wasn't a blowaway light novel but it served its purpose really well with providing some background characterization for Sayaka, a character I always liked but never felt like was fantastic compared to how Yuu and Touko was written. This novel wasn't a unique story but it was something that gave Sayaka a ton more groundwork and made me feel genuine sympathy for her character by the end of the book, and for how she was always left stranded despite her just being an innocent girl with the curse of falling in love.
