Why does everyone in the series seem to hate Kotoko, apart from the spirits?

She's a beautiful, funny, kind, dependable and caring young woman who gives it her all when helping others, and yet everyone seems to wish she wasn't around. I don't think I've ever seen such a heartless cast of characters in an anime.

I actually love her and she's the one carrying the show for me. I love her design and her personnality. Such a sweet caring person, she deeply love her boyfriend which make me smile a lot.

Edit: Oh wait you were talking about people "in the show". I thought you talked about her popularity from the audience. Yes it's a bit strange that they seem to fear her so much. Maybe because she's close to the other side and humans are afraid of her because of that.

You haven't met someone like that in real life have you? They're fun to watch, but really annoying to be with. But hey, I could just be a prick myself.

She was vulgar and desperate.

I liked Saki more other than her police job.

My theory is because of Kotoko become the goddess of wisdom at 11 and the powers she received affected her emotional development plus the interacting with so many yokai, spirits and the like would change a person like moving from one cultural area to another like an American moving to Japan they would adopt some of the social and cultural norms. Another reason it may seem everyone other than the yokai dislike her is because of her bombastic personality that like that one over top relative that fine in small doses but grating otherwise plus the fixation on Kuro who like her walks with a foot in both world she both a human but also a goddess of wisdom and he a hybrid of yokai and human.

I wouldn't say everyone in the show hates her. The only reason rikka and Saki dislike her is due to her closeness with kuro. It has nothing to do with the person she is... just jealousy. I don't mind her, but I couldn't shake my desire for kuro and Saki to have some closure if not get back together at all. It really left a bad taste in my mouth with the whole relationship between them, kinda ruining the show a tad. Same with Rikka, the anime explains nothing as far as building on their childhood only having each other. If what they say at different times is true, and they both care about one another then how did Rikka get to where she was. Why weren't they there for each other. I'm not on the cuz on cuz love boat but I'd of liked there relationship to be more explained and logical.
