I'd recommend Akira(can be write as 明 in Japanese, which means bright). The movie is actually a legend which defined the soul of that era. This movie is defo a shepherd of sci-fi genre back then.
One of the interesting thing is that Otomo Katsuhiro actually predicted the Olympics hold in Tokyo in 2020.

Must watch: The Tatami Galaxy, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, Haibane Renmei, Hajime no Ippo, and Himegoto.

Give it a go: Transformers The Movie (1986), Gundam Universal Century in its entirety, Top wo Nerae!, Kuuchuu Buranko, Shoujou Kakumei Utena, Area 88, and MD Geist.

Avoid: Everything by J.C. staff that isn't Utena, Prison School, or Shimoneta. Anything in my drop list, except Aggressive Retsuko, which is quite good for a while but I found repetitive.

If it's in the must watch tier, I consider it one of the greatest animes ever made, and I think it should be required viewing for everyone. Give it a go means that it's a fantastic show, but is not as wide-reaching as the must watches. Avoid is self-explanatory.

Whilst slightly obscure, I'd strongly recommend the manga Ani no Yome to Kurashiteimasu (Life with my brother's wife)

This is a story about an orphaned girl who has recently lost her brother. She goes on to live with her brothers wife and, through interacting with different people around her, she slowly comes to terms with her loss.

Synopsis - A comedy show about a group of 5 girls (and their cat) sharing a house in Tokyo.

The episodes are about 10 minutes long, and are usually split into 2 sections - the first being scripted comedy scenarios, and the second being improvised by the voice actresses.

Why I like it - the comedy in it is really funny, it has a couple weak episodes but even those are still quite entertaining. The art is also very nice, and it has a comfy yuri atmosphere.

I've been told the show takes a while to get going (gets good around episode 3) so if you don't enjoy it immediately I'd recommend holding out for that long. Personally I found it to be very entertaining from the start.

If you find yourself enjoying it, I'd also recommend other shows from the same studio - Studio Bouncy. The quality of their shows varies quite a bit, I personally enjoyed Tesagure! Bukatsu-mono a lot.

Also, the girls all have supernatural powers.

Sora yori mo Tooi Basho - https://anilist.co/anime/99426/Sora-yori-mo-Tooi-Basho/

Synopsis - A coming of age show about a group of highschool girls going on an expedition to Antarctica to make the most out of their youth.

Why I like it - This is my favorite anime of all time. The show is really uplifting and inspirational. It also has a lot of emotional moments and I cried a lot while watching it. The animation and soundtrack are also fantastic.

If you enjoy this show, I recommend also checking out K-ON! (or vice versa since you've more likely seen K-ON! than Sora yori mo Tooi Basho). The themes in the two shows feel very similar, with K-ON! being a bit lighter on the emotions and heavier with the slice of life / cute girls elements.
