There is a Nekopara OVA that will give you enough backstory.
The VNs are great, also they are all hentai

I've never played the VN but I think its just supposed to be cute and lewd you are this person aspiring to be a baker and you just moved to your own place and when you open your moving boxes two catgirls appear and in the game you can pat them and do lewder things to them cause thats what gets that cheddar $$$ but I think aside from having lewd sites its mostly comedy and supposed to be more wholesome romance

Well... the main appeal of the VNs is fucking your lewd catgirls everywhere. With some pretty stellar art by a very well-known artist called Sayori, as well as some quite advanced hentai animations supported by the game engine

What the anime is portraying is seemingly all the slice of life fluff that the games contain early on and in-between sex scenes. And while that certainly works in terms of just showing off cute catgirls doing cute things, it's still only ever a secondary selling point in the original games. So just from a design standpoint, making an all-ages adaptation of Nekopara was always quite weird to me. Would've made for an excellent hentai anime but like this it'll never be much more than what a censored ecchi anime normally feels like watching

I've played all of the VNs so I can say that this is stuff that's not from them, except the events from the flashback. So I'd say that the TV series will have an original story.

Most animes adaptation of VNs are just fan service for the already existing fans. Fan service as in letting us see events where the characters are animated, where else in VN form it's just sprites and backgrounds. Though keep in mind, almost all VN adaptations are kinda trash with mostly mediocre animation, art work, limited dialouges/character development etc. Whilst the VN would have stellar art and backgrounds and basically the whole package. I've personally never played Nekopara though.

There are some things that show that this story deviates from the VNs, but they have the same backstory.

There's also a different voice cast in this currently airing anime, and Chocola and Vanilla look younger here than in the VNs.

Basically, if you want them cute, watch the anime. If you want them sexy, play the VNs. Each VN focuses on 2 catgirls, first Chocola & Vanilla, then Azuki & Coconut, finally Cinnamon & Maple. I took 6-12 hours to read through each of them, not counting the time I spent repeating the H scenes.

As a seasoned veteran in Nekopara, I love this anime.
