My thoughts on this arc (episodes 8-9)

Dr. Chaos' obaasan landlady is not to be messed with lol, I like fierce obaasan.

It's interesting to think about how Mikami herself is meant to be received in 1990s Japan, since she is "scary" according to the (middle aged?) male ghost when she physically protects herself from sekuhara; on the other hand, Mikami is also quite desirable, even the pain she inflicts on Yokoshima is desirable to him. There is an interesting tension between patriarchal assumption a woman's body should be freely accessible, and the punishing of this idea (through Yokoshima) constantly, by Mikami and by Yokoshima's stupidity and swaggering. Mikami is both modern and ancient- she has authority over a man as his employer, and the more ancient Shinto one of women as spiritual authority.

When in episode 8 Dr. Chaos decides to kill Mikami Reiko after she defeated him in episode 7, he complains that he was defeated by a girl ("musume") and even his explanation to the viewer of how the time-space elixir works is cut short as the camera pulls away from him, leaving him confused at this departure from cinematic expository norm. Later, Mikami explains what the magical elixir does, and Chaos is not even allowed to be the voice of authority here. This is very interesting framing.

Mikami is intelligent and very successful at business, especially her self-employment, makes her a real (anti-) heroine for the 1990s as "Japan Inc." began to collapse and enormous Japanese corporations could not provide security and Japanese workers tired of their excessive control.

Sekuhara in Mikami to me seems to exist in a similar way as Urusei Yatsura, a perhaps cathartic recognition of its daily existence as a problem for women, perhaps a cathartic depiction of the horniess of the character and presumably the male audience. It seems to exist also to for off-color humor, like Yokoshima focusing his spiritual power by toucing Mikami's tits. I guess Mikami keeps Yokoshima around since it's not easy to find someone stupid enough to work for less than $3 a day but I know some people are going to be totally put off by this .
