For anyone curious about the differences between the OVA version and this one, there are almost 100 minutes of footage not included in the TV version. In this blog post I broke down how much footage is present in each episode to compare the total amount of footage in both versions.

I think the cut content mostly amounts to extra tidbits of character interactions, because the whole main plot seems to be present in the TV version. So, this version has the advantage of being a quicker watch, but there's extra "fan service" in the OVA version.

The cut provides for a much smoother narrative. It propels the series to the next level.

Although some parts are really better served by a slight different voice line. The examples that come to mind include the conversation between Dozle and Ramba Ral about gassing citizens of a side 7 banshi. The cut makes for a funnier exchange but no military job is about asking a single person. That’s just a silliness that takes away from realism and immersion. And the pacing of the new cut can easily be suited by a few different voice lines. Another example is the background of Roselusia and the context of Astraia’s treatment. The cut makes it all unclear. Either do the original, which implies Astraia’s house arrest to be a result of personal feuds within the Deikun family; or go all the way to blame Zabi family. The treatment Astraia receives and the separation of her and the children are a corner piece in portraying Char’s origin. Leaving it unclear makes for a plot hole.

Why I didn't read this earlier. I'd just finish watching the TV version. Thanks for the info. I'll add it to my watch list.

That all depends on what you would rather get out of it. If you want to absorb the main plot quicker, watch the TV version. If you want to get all of the UC fanservice and easter eggs, watch the OVAs.

In that case I would recommend the TV version. It can serve as a relatively quick back story for the original Mobile Suit Gundam anime (Or the movie trilogy that summarizes it).

Like I said before, I would recommend the TV version of Gundam the Origin.
