My memory is fuzzy but didn't the first season have low sales and reception?

I didn't realize they kept making new seasons.

The series' main income came from OST and character songs.

The first season was quite low in quality but it got massive budget boost from season 2 onward. The fanbase keep growing from there.

For example:

This is how it is in S5

Wow that's amazing. I might watch it for the animation alone.

Guess I got to start from season 1...

No. Season 1 had an average of 5k disc sales, which is quite good. It only kept rising after this, with season 4 having an average of almost 15k disc sales. No other show managed this before over the course of 4 seasons.

I've never seen sales figures for the first season, always heard they sold average. Reception was in no way bad in Japan, and in the West it was more unknown/ignored than poorly received. I have no idea why but MAL in particular had a hateboner for it. Seriously looking at reviews and threads for the 1st season people are just so unreasonably mad and nitpicky, I don't know what the fuck happened there. And I've seen people flat out refuse to give the series a chance due to how ugly S1's reviews on MAL look.

Now the thing is, the CDs sold very well. Enough to justify a second season. Produciton was also taken over by Satelight, and there was a change in director. From there on the series got big in Japan with each season's Blurays selling more than the previous (both GX and AXZ were among the top sellers of their respective years, if I recall correcntly), and the CDs and other merch also going super strong.

I'm not sure why the series remained so unknown among western anime fans even when it took off like that. I wouldn't be surprised if it was widely disliked or its success not understood (like many other series that are popular in Japan but not here), but it seems most people in the English-speaking anime communities aren't even aware it exists which is weird given what I described about its sales. not to mention how unusual it is for an anime-original property get 5 seasons with each having higher production value and sales than the previous, it's usually the other way around.

I've been watching it since season one, and despite my best efforts to plug it in the groups I belong to, it gets almost no reaction. It's weird.

S1 was all over the place, tbf, because that season, imo, was probably a kinda experimental installment to see how it’ll work out. It IS an anime original, so it doesn’t have something like previously established source material to really sponge off of.

It doesn't get recognition in the west, but it's a big franchise in Japan now. S1 had around 5k sales, which is pretty good, and S2+ have better budget and animation, the fanbase kept growing and it reached average 14k+ per BD volume by season 4.

It got popular each week cus of the director being a card game type of person.

Plus it managed to outsell Monogatari S2 at one point which is pretty damn impressive. But apparently this is the final season from what I've heard.
Don't believe the hype.
