Kyoto Animation & The Anime Community
Guys I just want to take a minute and vent a little. My heart at the moment is broken and I debated about actually writing about this as it kind of does and does not relate to UAS but here I am now typing away. By now everyone should have heard about the fire that took place at Kyoto Animation's Studio #1 on Thursday. Like many around me news came in late that night as I, as well as many others here in the United States went to sleep only knowing that a fire broke out not knowing its real extent and the utterly unbelievable news that waited for us in the morning. 33 people had come to parish in the fire (20 women, 12 men, and 1 unidentified gender) and 35 more seriously injured (With on passing away on Friday). The building ,which was ablaze for 5 hours, was utterly destroyed and the images and video from the scene were gruesome and hard to believe. Things will never be the same but one thing for sure they are not alone.
Tragedy strikes every single day. Big or small no one is more important than the other. One way to ease the pain of tragedy is the coming together of people. I should know, I speak from experience. Back in 2016 I lost my brother to a hit and run by a drunk driver. This was my first time dealing with tragedy that struck so close to home and it really hurt. I honestly didn't know how to deal with it. Through my family, friends, and several of you here in UAS I made it through it. I am forever grateful for that. So when I see so many people across the anime community come together to #HelpKyoAniHeal it is truly astounding to see the amount of love, caring, and support the community has given over the last 2-3 days. All throughout social media people are #PrayingForKyoAni. Sentai Filmworks kicked it off with a Go Fund Me in the early hours of the 18th for Kyoto Animation which broke its goal of $500,000 in a little over 2 hours. It went on to break the new goal of $750,000 in 6 hours and completely soared over $1,000,000 in 13 hours. Right now it stands at $1.7 million and there is still time to donate. KyoAni's online market place has been visited by thousands buying digital prints and merchandise to directly support the studio. Many even post step by step instructions so you can checkout from the store with ease.
It is really wonderful to see the community rally together like this at a time when it so much bigger than anime. At a time when there is so much hate and anger being spread around we can rise above it and come to the aid of people we have never even met. I for one am truly proud of the community and the thousands of people (anime and non-anime fans alike) who have come together and shared a little human kindness. One of the things I do love about the anime community is the fact that we have the power to come together and spread a little human kindness. Ever gone to an anime convention and had more friends when you left than when you came? Ever went to an anime movie release, festival, or show and shared the same emotions, reactions, and sorrow when it is over as the person next to you? Ever been in a bookstore looking at manga only to have someone come up to you and start a 30 minute conversation about the manga you were browsing at a minute ago? Tragedy doesn't have to strike for us to come together and share a little kindness. That's not just in the anime community but everyday life as well. Opt for optimism and maybe we can prevent things from like this from actually occurring.
