| You only need to know who are who. Two of the main characters in Toaru Kagaku no Accelerator are inherited from Index which are Accelerator that you already know and Last Order who was first shown in Index 1 ep 19. You also need to know a certain thing that happened to Accelerator which occured in Index S1 ep 20. There are also some minor characters :

If you enjoyed Index so far, yeah it would be better to watch Index first to at least understand the relationship between Accelerator & Last Order. If you don't care much of the RailDex franchise, I think you can watch Kagaku no Accelerator. You'll just wonder why Accelerator looks like that. |

| Is it a necessity to watch the former series? I had no idea this was a spin-off or whatever, and actually enjoyed the first episode. I have so much on my plate to watch this season, going back to play catch-up isn’t going to work for me, right now. |

This is meant to a separate branch of the Index franchise, which is loaded with world building and crossover interactions. Might make the series a little less accessible, but trust me when I say that this franchise is great when it comes to rewarding loyalty. The world of Index is vast, and it'd be a shame to limit yourself to just one series. Granted, the Index anime does trim out a lot of what makes the light novels great, so the barrier to entry here is quite steep. If you're not that into books--and the Index anime doesn't appeal to you either--then the Accelerator series might not be an ideal watch. Although, for what's it's worth, I don't have a low opinion of the Index anime. The world building doesn't get carried over as well, and the protagonist isn't as great as he could've been, but it's interesting enough on its own. You might find the science vs. magic concept enjoyable. Edit: Also, might be worth watching Gigguk's take on the series. He explains the draw to this franchise in great detail, and that might get you a little more vested in it. |
