Kurokawa still has that inferiority complex. That thing about not being equal. Ugh.
Quickly get over it.

For the most part, Useless Princesses is doing surprisingly well grappling with the drama cliches every school drama story is inevitably faced with. What surprised me is that the thing with Iro and Kuro was treated well, in the sense that Fuji doesn't say something stupid that she can't take back. It's not another misunderstanding or trite problem that the audience can't get behind.

Because they use Izumi to break things down to Fuji, we're able to feel empathy and sympathy for her position, and we know why she's doing what she's doing. And more importantly, she knows what she's doing. Weirdly, this series never delves into melodrama - which is a good thing in my eyes. We get those flashes where Fuji snaps and lashes out at people, but it's always defused quickly.

And another thing is the foreshadowing: when I was reading Koe no Katachi, it was like one problem got solved, and they just had to introduce another one to fill the time. Again and again. And you don't see it coming, either, because there's no real foreshadowing. It's like they're done dealing with the major characters, so let's have the minor characters get upset to throw them back off balance! And I was left wondering why it didn't end 40 chapters ago.

Useless Princesses does foreshadowing right. We know the way Kurokawa views their relationship from the very beginning. It has never been any different. When she says, "I'll only trust what [my princess] says!" it's that character trait rearing its head again. Her inferiority complex is everywhere if you're looking for it. So now, it's not like they've suddenly introduced another problem out of left field just to create some drama. It's just that they're only now starting to address that problem. And I have no problem with that.

And if we're talking about Kuro's inferiority complex, we've gotta talk about Fuji's superiority complex. She wants to "make Kuro cute", but she also feels like she's losing ground and feeling less confident of herself the cuter she gets. Jealousy and over-protectiveness rear their head.

Both problems look like they're going to be addressed soon, and the friend group is increasing at the same time.

I'm...surprised with how much I'm enjoying this series. I didn't expect it to be so well-setup or so well-written, but I guess that happens once in a while.
