Drawing advice needed

I've been trying to get an understanding of how the Citrus manga was drawn, as I'm learning to draw myself and I'm a massive fan of the style. So when it comes to the eyes, I'm having some real trouble, so if anyone knows how they're done, please let me know, it'd be hugely appreciated!

I've tried doing just pencils, but the black of the pupils is coming off much lighter than I want them to be, especially compared to what I'm trying to mimic. The upside of doing it this way though was that the shading seems to blend much more naturally.

On the other end of the spectrum, using just pens and a fine liner has been pronounced as I'd hope it would be, but then when I've got round to doing the shading transition from the top half of the Iris to the bottom, it looked so abrupt.

I also tried mixing the 2 (which is how I'm currently doing it) but this still doesn't seem to be how it's done with the Citrus manga, so it's a bit unsatisfying.

Again, any help at all is appreciated.
