I've read the manga and all I can say is that the first episode has been utterly disappointing. They changed a lot of the key elements, including him somehow making a friend and not being able to control his power.
They also did the introduction regarding how the sorcerers are treated rather poorly. Though in the end, this is just my opinion, I'm curious about what other people think about the adaptation of this French manga.
I agree. They messed up quite a bit on the introduction of Seth and removed all the humour and original traits of Seth as a character.
They just made Seth clumsy and made him like any other shonen character with no distinctive traits. In the manga he's supposed to be stupid and naive at first so much that he punches cows because he thought they were Nemeses (they have the exact same color pattern) even if he drinks milk with their appearance displayed on the milk bottle every morning :p.
Also they changed the fact that this is peasants that runs after him and then try to lynch him in front of Alma, and that was an important point of the manga at least in the first scene to present the background of the universe to viewers.
Also that's because he causes so much mess that are presented to the reader in the manga that the sentence of Alma "You're really no different than a nemeses" (which is not in this episode) has so much sense and it also gives to the reader a glimpse of what are trully the nemeses (are they really evil ?).
They do tell in one sentence of Alma that he always cause mess to the Pompo Hills but since it's an anime adaptation they should SHOW and don't tell to the viewer, also this sentence is drowned in the middle of all the other background explanations for the universe and don't impact much the viewer (sorcerers are heavily discriminated and lynched pretty much everywhere).
And the incident with the cows at the beginning is too different to be considered a purposely made mess, Seth causes mess on purpose because he thinks it's the best way to achieve his goals :
- punches nemeses/cows so that he can save injured people/resting peasants,
- breaks the egg of a nemeses so he can beat the living crap out of it and being seen as a hero and stop being discriminated as a sorcerer vermin instead of waiting for the egg to hatch or even make it roll while it's hatching to eject it from the Pompo Hills...
- He even kidnap kids and tie them to save them from the nemeses
Instead in the anime, in the first episode the only mess he does is caused by purely accidental reasons... that's not the way Seth has been build up as a character in the manga, thus the disappointement...
Also wtf is wrong with Seth and the books (seriously couldn't believe they made Seth read a book while he's completely stupid and ignorant about pretty much everything and discovers the world with the reader in the manga, seriously he can't make the distinction between a rabbit and a deer).
And he can cast spell (Titan Punch) even with his gloves ??? WTF ! Did they read past the first chapter when they adapted this into an anime ?
Also I can't verify it now, but I think he still has his glove on the right hand in the first episode when he crashes on the nemeses' egg while in the manga he lost it and that allowed him to not die since that's how he successfully landed without dying...
I'm really disappointed on those changes but I still was entertained by all the other aspects (opening and ending are good, music is fitting, animation is constant all the episode and colours are good too, Alma's voice is top tier, and Seth's voice doesn't disappoint me as much as I thought it would when I first saw the trailers).
It's just a shame they failed to correctly introduce the hero to anime-only viewers who will then think the show is just "generic" (and they're right, this episode just felt like an adaptation of shonen#4758) while the manga is so fresh and entertaining (seriously all the bits from the first chapter that made me laugh and found it original are removed).
But either way I'll still eagerly wait for the next episodes (and they can't decently fail Rumble Town's arc)
Edit : images comes from the japanese manga version because I couldn't find the original scans at this moment + I'm trying to learn japanese and it's more easier with manga I already know + it's cool :p
Well, we now have the proof they didn't read past the first chapter and skipped half of the pages while reading the first chapter since IT IS IMPOSSIBLE for Seth to use fantasia when he uses a feather artifact (and here he wears feather gloves so he should have died from the fall).
@Batora07
To be honest, I'd like to believe you, but I doubt that hitting cows (if you're talking about the elephant/cows stuff we see in the episode) helps the character to be more appealing.
I won't say that he was unbearable like Asta but he seems too generic. Stupid and weak heroes, I think a lot of shounen have reused this concept and I must admit that I'm irritated to see this kind of archetypes.
The conflict between the wizards and the normal humans is a very recurrent theme, thus MC rejected by his society and he must therefore try to be accepted by others.
I hope the series will have interesting themes or an original worldbuilding at least, wait and see

Seth is definitely not a weak hero, he's one of the only being in the Radiant universe that can use fantasia with bare hands (we learn this in the first chapter and it's detailed in the second chapter). But since it's suspicious in the universe of Radiant he's forced by Alma to wear them so that they're not hunted by the Inquisition.
He's definitely not like Asta.
And he hit the cows because he tried to "save" people he thought were attacked by them (since they have the same color pattern than nemesis), if he didn't saw corpses on the ground he'd let Alma do it in his place.
So he's not THAT stupid to just hit cows for fun, it's just that he acts before thinking but always to do what seems to him like the good thing to do.
@Batora07
Okay, but he doesn't look smart either. Shounen main characters who act before thinking, I think they are too numerous to count.
What I mean is that in the end, despite the differences between the manga and the anime, there is no real difference with mangas that the author wanted to imitate. (We still feel the inspiration of shounen manga)
Anyway I hope the following episodes will be more interesting.
Read first 2 chapters after seeing this topic......I VASTLY prefer the anime version save for maybe the lynching part, as for the glove thing, he says it's too slow using the gloves not impossible, so it makes sense given it took him like a full minute or two to charge the Fantasia for the fist. It'd be impossible if he JUST got the gloves, but both anime and manga clearly say he's been training thus it makes no sense for it to still be impossible.
Also, I didn't find any humour in his stupidity so yeah no thanks. Only 4 chapters to read everywhere I see so.....

I wish i can read the manga but it's not translated into English :(

He definitely can't use a simple spell like repulse when using the hand that wears the glove, so yeah it's impossible for him in the chapter 1 to use fantasia with gloves, he has to take a training later on in Artemis to understand why and get a small power up. he probably can use magic with his powers but as you said and what's been showned in the first episode it seems to take him a long time to load the fantasia, he definitely should have died when he fell on the egg since Lerche's staff didn't removed the glove on his right hand... so the consistency of the show with the manga so far is pretty limited.
Everytime he uses fantasia he removes at least one glove, also evey time a character uses fantasia there is a kind of aura around their body/ "feather" gear.
The punch at the cow was not a magic punch, that's just a random punch launched at speed since he ran to the cow :
There are 70~ chapters in french and 60~ in japanese right now, and the first volume, with the 4 first chapters, is quite unimpressive as a shonen (but I found it greatly engaging). The following manga volumes greatly improved in terms of story and characters imo (and in humour too).
Episode 2 :
Well congrats Lerche staff you successfully removed all interesting aspects from the manga so far.
Humour ? None, all removed !
Seth kidnapping the girl and her brother ? Nope
Violence againt the peasants from the Bravery Quartet to show just how bad the discriminated people can strike back ? Well nope.
The Bravery Quartet trying to kill Seth by removing him his gloves after the punch on the boss ? Nope.
Alma fucking got a 6th sense out of nowhere and sense that Seth is in danger (while he's not yet) ... what was the point ?
All those goddamn awful scenes at the bank made me itch...
Also ... THEY SERIOUSLY MADE JIJI LIKE A FUCKING MORON (while he's the only one to get what's going on and to understand what Seth can do, also he's using his powers way faster against Seth he was also supposed to explain the universe to the peasants so the readers learn more about Fantasia and sorcerers).
And what the fuck with this "I want to be the best sorcerer" fuckery ?
Also the fact that Tony Valente stated in an interview that the show was "for kids" already smelled like shit to me but it's really at the same level of censhorship 4kids did to japanese shows back in the day but here that's the opposite (japanese censoring western-originated shows... WOW).
