Volume 3, Chapter 5: Internal Affairs

This was a great chapter. A great deal has happened in these last 17 chapters, that it necessary to take a break and show the larger picture.

This chapter provides the most in-depth look into the workings of the angles so far. It explains why Being X has been doing what he has been doing, but also shows this war is following a larger design; the passion of the Allies is easier to understand knowing it is divinely inspired. It also avoids the story becoming too geopolitical and instead staying mainly in the realm of military strategy.

This chapter shows that the Empire's General Staff is based more on the Imperial Japanese example rather than the Imperial or Nazi German General Staff. The key difference is the rise of factions. The Imperial Japanese Army was plagued with faction infighting between different camps in the General Staff. This problem was exasperated by the outsized influence more junior officers possessed. It is telling that two major generals pretty much ran the conduct of the war. Carlo Zen is Japanese so I can't fault him for using the closer model. I also must admit it makes for a more interesting story.

I'm actually impressed with the audacity Carlo Zen showed by just removing one 'm' from Rommel to make his fictional character, Romel. I really loved the perspective this character gave. The cool thing about Tanya so far in this story is that different people have different opinions of her, differing from love to hate. This has made it difficult to pin down who exactly Tanya is, especially when she gives extremely biased testimony about herself. Romel has provided what I found to be the clearest picture of Tanya yet.I especially liked how Tanya doesn't know how twisted she is.

The real bombshell for me in this chapter was learning how much animosity Tanya has caused for herself. She has an incredibly checked reputation that is only salvaged by her extraordinary performance. What is surprising is that she has developed such a poor reputation even though she is conscious of trying to build a good reputation. She has staked her career on the coattails of Zettour, and she would quickly fall without her patron. However, it must be remembered that Tanya isn't planning to rise to the top of the military. Her goal is to live a comfortable life, so there is no need to position herself for a general's star. Her focus is instead to winning this war without destroying her reputation to the point where it effects her postwar life.
