I'm on episode 5, and for a series that was funded by Netflix, with a budget supposedly bigger than that of your average anime series, it's animation has been horribly average for any anime. It's true that a lot of the fight scenes feature CGI, but if that's the case, why do the non-action scenes look mostly average, even AICO:Incarnation had good animation, as did B:The Beginning. Those two were both original series, but Devilman Crybaby was based off a manga, but managed to have great animation for most of it, though that was probably because Masaaki Yuasa is a good director when it comes to animation, and knew that page-to-page adaptations are messy. Sword Gai comes off as an anime that just took the images from the manga and tried animating them, which is confusing, because they had that Netflix money, which makes the average animation seem even more baffling, can anyone explain this?

Because having Netflix on board doesn't mean more budget. The anime business model is that it is funded by different comapanies that then form its production committee. Netflix being part of that doesn't mean the budget would increase, substitute Netflix for another company and the anime would still have around the same budget. Budget is also not the main deciding factor of how the animation will turn out. A lot of TV anime with good animation cost about the same to make as the shitty ones.

Better budget does not necessarily equate to better visuals, and Netflix has not actually been on the production committees for any of these shows.

Just because one has a budget does not mean anything if one does not have the right talent. Anime is not a machine where the more money you put in, the better it will look. Hell, sometimes it's these budget limitations that allow for greater creativity.

it may be a netflix original which means they have online broadcasting rights for worldwide use and no other service like crunchroll etc does.

that is true, but this wasn't a TV show, they had pre-animated all of the episodes before release, I figured that since they weren't animating everything week by week, the animation would be of a higher quality than most TV anime.

Netflix holds onto a lot of shows, but that doesn't mean that the deadlines prior to this weren't strict. There was an article that came out recently discussing how the schedules and working conditions for Netflix anime hasn't done anything, though it's a bit aggressive in tone.

Why do people keep on thinking that,' netflix original = made by netflix'. You do know that netflix is mainly a streaming site/media right? Most of their shows aren't made by them, they just get/buy the rights/license. That 'original' thing is really misleading, they could've just named 'netflix exclusive'.

You do know that they produced this show right? They didn't make it, but they payed the people that did make so that those people can actually make it and put it on their site as an exclusive, I'd hope that people wouldn't confuse Netflix original with Netflix actually making it. Yes there are times when Netflix just licenses a series for North American Streaming rights, but in cases like Sword Gai, Devilman, B:The Beginning, A.I.C.O., and the upcoming Lost Song, Netflix produced the series for their site.
