Coming from someone who watched the entire show, I can see it as a reverse harem since it has 5-7 main male characters - most of who are vying (sometimes subtly) for Cardia's affection/acknowledgment.

I will say its not in like a lewd or in-your-face way nearly as much as the 'reverse harem' genre is thought of in some cases.

it may be true but the main guy is already a given as the girl is closest to him and it was no surprise that he was chosen.

Yeah, I would agree with that.

The anime is an adaptation of an otome visual novel by the same name. It primarily follows Lupin's route while weaving in the plots and backstories surrounding the other main characters and potential love interests from the game. I would consider the anime applicable to the reverse harem genre, due to the romantic undertones and higher ratio of male to female cast.

I strongly suggest playing the game as it has been licensed in English by Aksys Games (PS Vita or PS4-which includes the sequel stories) if the story interests you at all. The anime covers the bases but the pacing, world building, and character development is much more defined. It's hard to shove 60-80hrs of story into a 12 episode series. Upon discovering the anime was an adaptation I put it on hold until I finished the game. No regrets here.

Most reverse harems based off games have one main love interest (the main route in the game) that's clearly the one the MC is going to go with and a few others with some interest but no chance. However, anime is a pretty static medium so you can't play through relationships with the other characters and multi season shows in this genre like Hakuouki are pretty rare. Even then Chizuru and Hijikata was a sure thing most of the time and even with Amnesia (a series set up so each love interest was the heroines canonical boyfriend) Ukyo was clearly the main love interest when he was properly introduced.

It's harder to get a good reverse harem anime out of a game than a manga since it's structured for interactivity with a self insert protagonist to help suspend disbelief. Anime adaptations generally like to keep the same main structure and character as the protagonist. There were dialog suggesting there was more to the character relationships that was was shown so they probably cut a lot from other routes or showed things like flashbacks to the audience directly than have the mandatory spilling guts to the protagonist scene for all the potential love interests without changing the important plot points. I don't have access to the game so I wouldn't know. It makes sense for the anime, though. Cardia definitely has reverse harem protagonist vibes, though she's probably one of the better MCs from a game adaptations I've seen for this genre.

This is also more story based compared to something like Kamigami no Asobi that could split it's time pretty equally. I think it's stronger because of it, even if magical boy transformations aren't a part of this series.
