| THIS IS A MANGA ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS ANYTHING BEYOND THIS CHAPTER. ---------------------------------------- Volume 1: Chapter 2, I'm really fascinated by the equipment and technology that was employed. I actually wished fewer ships were involved in the battle so that the description of individual ship actions played a more prominent role. Unfortunately, there are multiple things about the battle that doesn't make sense. That tells me that the author isn't that familiar with military doctrine and how fighting actually turns out. An example is the problem presented with the detection of the enemy and the detection of friendly forces. The book explains that equipment such as radar has been countered for centuries, so manned visual and heat observation is necessary to find the enemy. One would expect that scouting units would take up a sizable portion of the fighting force because of how challenging it would be to actually find them. It would be similar to the late stages of cavalry forces. This also raises the issue of detecting your own forces. Whatever means you use to find your own forces can also be used by the enemy. Radio has an electromagnetic signature that can be spotted and triangulated. I don't know how the fleet commanders can have such clarity on their own forces without giving their opponent the same clarity. A directional communication laser could work, but that means all the information will have to be daisy-chained together. |
