This has insanely high ratings, even the first few seasons. Is it REALLY that good (Aria type of good) or is it just a feels good slice of life like many? What distinguishes Natsume from the rest?

In my opinion all the seasons deserve their rating. Natsume Yuujinchou has a very heavy character focus and carefully develops one of the most interesting and well rounded casts I've seen from any show. There's genuine substance to the stories that are told and the experiences Natsume and the others go through.

I wouldn't get too hung up on the slice of life tag for this series. There are definitely some slice of life elements, but I'd say the core of the anime is more supernatural mystery than any other genre.

If you've seen Mushishi, Natsume Yuujinchou has a very similar vibe.

Every episode of Natsume is full of beautiful feelings. I'm a manly man, but this show manages to tear me up quite often.

The mangaka did an awesome job with the story and the characters. As in, probably some of the best job in history, and the anime studio pulls off a tour de force with every. single. fucking. episode. They are not human. The animation, sounds, music, the voice acting all add wonderful layers to something that was already great. I consider it the magnum opus of modern storytelling. This show really enriched my life.
