THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
This is the discussion thread for Hungry Days: Majo no Takkyuubin-hen which came out a couple days ago. It is the 2nd commercial in the Hungry Days series.

While not having Ghibli involved, the CM does use the film's character designs. In the Kiki novel she had long hair with a black bow; but this CM is clearly taking Ghibli's design of a bob haircut with a red bow. In the book Kiki does eventually get a red scrunchie in the final volume but she's a grown ass woman with children of her own by then and is using it to sport a low ponytail for her still long hair like your typical Japanese housewife.

So it seems like such a kick to the Ghibli gut that they used their design for a noddle CM even though it's based on an award winning book series.

Having Kiki's Delivery Service/Majo no Takkyuubin listed as my favorite Studio Ghibli film, the commercial was okay. While I prefer the original character designs, I liked the detailed environments using Yokohama as the environment. There is even a scene where Kiki avoids crashing into a tree while riding her broomstick as the camera pans out to reveal the city environment, paying homage to the original film's shot yet giving a different take. I actually found it amusing that Kiki brought Tombo to a skyscraper just for a confession.

However, I do not understand the reasoning behind using these two characters. Kiki and Tombo could have easily been replaced by original characters and there would be no difference. Who knows? Maybe the creators of the commercial just wanted to imagine Kiki and Tombo in a different universe and that was the end. Maybe this was using the nostalgia card to make money.

I do wonder what Hayao Miyazaki and Studio's Ghibli's stance are on the commercial.

Rating: 5/10

I watched Kiki's Delivery Service about a year ago, and this episode whether it's a commercial or not really made it's way into my heart.

I wish that they would make this a real series so we can follow Kiki on her life 4 years after, that would indeed be beautiful, at least in my opinion.

It could be nice if more Ghibli movies or just other series/movies made new stuff way into the future, so we can meet the characters again and get that nostalgic feel for the characters we once loved when we were kids, but some of us have forgotten today. I hope this commercial leads to this outcome, but even i find that hard to believe.

Overall i rate this commercial/episode 10/10, I almost cried <3

Don't really get why this is a thing. But though it was very brief and the art style didn't really bring me back to watching this as a kid, it was kind of cool to see the character a bit more grown up, for 30 seconds.

Bad as a TV commercial from an American point of view. And there's something that strikes me as off about the style of storytelling & music that's clearly based on Your Name.; trying too hard to ride on that movie's coattails.
Art style's nice. Not interested in it becoming an actual movie/series if it's going to be like the ad though.

I thought it was 30 minutes, but it was 30 seconds. Got so baited. The song is amazing though, but this ad doesn't deserve it.

For what it is, a 30 seconds animation, it made me wanting this to be a series. The art-style looks awesome, though Kiki's character design is a bit too realistic for my liking. Voice acting was on point. For what it is, I can give this an 8 outta 10

Really cool seeing a grown up Kiki still with her cat and broom :)
Not a big fan of her character design but it's not too bad.

Looks like this commercial, and the rest too, are exploring the idea of 'youth' by having the two main characters, and other ones as well, from the original serious placed on a high school setting where love and romance blossoms between the two. Still, confessing on a skyscraper? Kiki sure went all out to confess to Tombo.

Kiki in a Makoto Shinkai setting with Gohands filter on? Meh.
