"Universe" watching required to enjoy the Movies?

Dear Tenchi fans,

I'm currently watching the Ryo-Ohki OVA series and enjoying it thoroughly. Once completed, I might want to give some of the movies a shot. I understand that the second one, "Daughter of Darkness", is considered standalone(-ish) while "in Love" 1 & 2 are part of the "Tenchi Universe" continuity.

If I jumped right into the first "in Love" movie after the OVAs, would I miss much? Are the "in Love" movies comprehensible and entertaining enough if one is unfamiliar with the "Universe" TV show? While I'm loving the OVAs, I don't feel particularly inclined to watch "Universe" if it's just a reimagining of the OVA story.
