Why does Five kill herself?
This one beats me every time. It didn't seem like that would accomplish anything for her.
And who fires an employee on field (especially when there's a gun in reach)?

Also, why is there some sort of awkward romantic relationship between Five and Nine? I mean, you don't get possessive over a classmate you knew when you were five unless you've met them sometime after. Am I missing something?

I remember asking this question and had a small discussion with a friend of mine. IIRC, she basically suicide because
1. she gonna die eventually from the drug thingy (from that facility)
2. she didn't want Nine to "Win" (Win as in beat her at the spot because iirc, they were cornered in some way)

A. Technically, wasn't Nine the one who had been cornered? Wait, when you say 'they had been cornered', are you implying that Nine and Five had been working in tandem? o.O In Five's introduction episode, she says she was playing because 'you need a loser to crush so bad they can't recover', idk but seemed pretty hostile to me..
B. I don't remember any explicit reference to a certain drug thingy.
C. I guess Five was probably capable of this kind of thought flow, but it seems pretty foolish to kill yourself because you're eventually going to die, unless this impending death (or rather, its cause) is causing you pain right now.
D. I'm sorry, what's iirc?

Just speculations but hopefully my input helps. Sorry for the wall of text.

A/C: "they had been cornered"; I think she's referring their limited lifespan, knowing children from the facility did not live for very long. She had hoped that Nine and Twelve would live longer as they escaped and so had consumed less of the drug compared to her.
She's survived for so long in hopes to finally win against Nine, just the once. Five resorted to pulling the death card in desperation feeling her life slipping. By going against Nine till the end to leave as strong an impression as possible, he'll remember her. Remember that she lived.
Her hostile line is to just signify how fierce her will was and later to explain how, out of all the children, she's survived. Just as how Nine and Twelve has (to expose the past).

B: It was mentioned when Shibazaki visited Mamiya and the Dr introduced the cause of gathering the children (To artificially reproduce savant syndrome).

As for the romance aspect I think it's more a branch from Fives obsession over beating Nine. At the end having feel she's finally won for once, she's can be more a normal girl and admit he's been her whole world...all her life.

I totally agree with you. The romance-part is not as awkward and wrong in place as it seems to be. Five was a strong-willed, fighting girl, which survived an experiment most people would have not. But still... she had feelings, she had dreams and she wanted to be remembered. To win was her life and nine was her greatest opponent. In the end, she finally managed to stand above him, so her dream has got fulfilled. She knew there was no way out of the situation and she didn't want to be a prisoner or die in dishonor. So in the greatest moment of her life (or at least one of the better once) she ended her tragedy. The kiss is a symbol of standing above nine, to be the one who won. And maybe a certain try to be remembered at least by one person.

This series needs quiet more than one thought about the story. So many ppl react like "Oh my god, Five is so useless, Five is such a bitch blablabla.", but she's not. Her acting isn't that absurd.
My only regret is having regrets!
