I love this anime, still haven't finished the second season and I'm so excited for season three, and oh by the way this anime is not about shipping the characters lol of course there are lots of yaoi/shounen ai fanfics or fan arts that some people love but it's not the reason for the hype, i guess for me it's the characters, as some already said in this thread the characters are very likable and the story is exciting, maybe it's not your cup of tea of course we all have our preferences. :)

I agree with the OP. After watching both seasons of Haikyuu I think this is a alright sports anime with above average likable characters, animation, and matches. However the pacing of this show is just too terrible for words and really lowered my score for this anime. Such as the beginning of s2 with 12 episodes straight of training camp.

Honestly, what appealed to me in the anime was the character developement and the backstory for most of the background characters. Their personalities also were very interesting. Every team each had a goal and of course every team wants to win. The anime doesn't really give the "Karasuno is the best team the other teams are literally shit" vibe. Instead it gives you their own perspectives and not only the main characters'. It makes me reconsider on who should I root for. Really it's all in the games. Especially the backstory for Ennoshita. He got me really deep. I felt sorry for not even noticing him in every episode since the first season. I've only started noticing him frequently after his story showed up. I don't really think it's about how good-looking they are or how popular the homosexual ships they have. Although I am into yaoi, I dislike seeing Haikyuu ships all round. It just doesn't feel right because to me they are better as a team and not as a gay gang rape or smth. Personally, the plot is just great. Depends on preference that's all.

It has zero uniquness. i guess it makes no mistakes and has good execution. It will be forgotten in a few years like almost all sports series.

No way this is becoming an evergreen or classic

It's popular because the plot and the character's development are good, it's simple as that.
Putting the "fujobait" or things like that aside, I, personally, love the characters so much rather than the story like most of people said, the characters are likeable. And fyi, i'm not the type of girls who like gay, yaoi, or fujoshi things. And haikyuu fulfilled it by not putting gayness inside (or so i believe).

I wonder the same. It's boring AF, I'm about to drop it.

After watching KuroBas, Haikyuu is not even close to being entertaining.

Fujoshis and shonenfags are the only people watching it so no one's there to rate it down.

Same situation with KnB where the later seasons are rated higher because less members to criticize it.

yea im pretty sure thats not the reason why

Haikyuu is the 4th best selling manga in Japan for a reason.

The characters are probably its best selling point. Even though most of the time they are pretty archetypal, there is always something unique about them. The comedy of Haikyuu is really well written, I don't remember laughing this much over many other anime/manga, even comedy ones.

I found the sport to be extremely realistic. Sure, not even close to 100%, but compared to shows like Kuroko no Basuke, it's just very grounded. I loved it so much I started playing volleyball right after finishing the show and I was able to learn so many techniques and understand so many strategies that helped me in real games just thanks to the show.

When I'm talking about likeable characters, I don't just mean that one hot guy, I mean like... all the fucking characters. They're all likeable. There aren't any real villanious antagonists and the story might have been told from any of the teams' perspectives.

Next up, there isn't actually almost any fanservice OR fujo bait. I walked into this anime expecting a lot of gay only to be pleasantly surprised that there wasn't any? I know this fandom has a lot of fujos in it (and frankly, I count myself as one of them), but I still appreciate the canon so much for not giving in into cheap bait like fanservice and yaoi. Anything you see in the fandom is constructed by the fans and the source material doesn't actually provide much leeway there. I believe Haikyuu is heavily misrepresented int his regard.

I think its a matter of preference? I don’t like sports and I didn’t like sports anime before (watched kuroko and didn’t like it, find it too flashy for basketball and the matches are too nerve wracking, I can’t stand it). Haikyuu is the first sport anime that I like because its somehow relaxing and heart warming to watch? I’m not sure how to explain it but thats just how I feel watching it. It also gave a good amount of hype when some of the characters are doing unexpected things. I also find that it is more realistic than kuroko (tho not 100%) and the characters are all very likeable. Tried to watch diamond no ace after haikyuu but its not exactly my fave due to the MC (Sawamura). For me Sawamura is not likeable, but again it really depends on personal preference. Also, diamond no ace is too frustrating to watch... I know its more realistic but I don’t need a reality slap when I watch anime to relax 😂 and thats why I prefer haikyuu more.

The matches are well directed and well animated. The other aspects of it are just ok.
